🌟 Last week, the Education Office of NCSR Demokritos had the absolute honor to host Adrianos Golemis, Lead Flight Surgeon at the European Space Agency - ESA, at NCSR "DEMOKRITOS" ! 🌟 ⚡️Adrianos Golemis delivered a captivating talk on space missions and their profound effects on the human body, shedding light on the challenges astronauts face and the cutting-edge medical solutions being developed to ensure their health and safety in extreme environments. 🚀A highlight of his talk was the discussion on Greece’s potential role in space exploration. 🚀 A massive thank you to Adrianos Golemis for sharing his expertise and passion with us, to Ino Tafa for helping us organize the event and to everyone who attended for making this event a success!

🚨 BREAKING: KM3NeT Detects an Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Neutrino! 🚨 On February 12, 2025, the KM3NeT Collaboration announced the detection of a record-breaking ultra-high-energy cosmic neutrino, measuring ~220 PeV, from the depths of the Mediterranean Sea. 🌊✨ This groundbreaking discovery marks a major milestone in neutrino astronomy, shedding light on the most extreme cosmic events in the universe. The Greek team has played a pivotal role in KM3NeT’s construction, operation, data analysis, and management. Our brilliant and talented young researchers recently made an outstanding impact at the 11th International Conference on Micro-Nanoelectronics, Nanotechnology, and MEMS, hosted by the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, University of the Aegean. Their dedication to advancing science is truly inspiring! 🌟 Special congratulations to Panagiotis Skaltsounis from the Institute of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology at NCSR Demokritos for winning a prize for his exceptional poster presentation on a microfluidic device for microparticle and rare cell separation! Meet more of our talented team: 🔹 Dr. Dimitra Tsounidi from the Institute of Nuclear and Radiological Sciences, Technology, Energy and Safety (INRASTES) presented her research on a biosensor using reflectance spectroscopy to detect biomolecules, with potential applications in medical diagnostics. 🔹 Panagiotis Sarkiris (Institute of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology at NCSR Demokritos) is advancing research in superhydrophobicity and friction reduction to enhance efficiency in ship motion. 🔹 Dimitris Nioras (Institute of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology at NCSR Demokritos) is developing superhydrophobic materials to collect water from the atmosphere—a promising solution for water-scarce areas! 🔹 Lefteris Manouras (Institute of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology at NCSR Demokritos) shared his work on superhydrophobic membranes for water desalination, contributing to sustainable solutions for freshwater. 👏 We are incredibly proud of their achievements. Their research not only pushes the boundaries of science but also holds immense promise for enhancing health, sustainability, and quality of life worldwide.

One of the most inspiring conferences, the 11th International Conference on Micro-Nanoelectronics, Nanotechnology, and MEMS has come to an end! Some of the top researchers from the Institute of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology at NCSR Demokritos and the Institute of Nuclear and Radiological Sciences, Technology, Energy and Safety (INRASTES), presented their groundbreaking work leaving everyone in awe! Among the highlights was the presentation by Evangelos Gogolides, the Director of the Institute of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology at NCSR Demokritos, who introduced the new clean room infrastructure at NCSR "DEMOKRITOS" - an exciting leap forward for the research. Our own Vassilis Constantoudis, Panagiota Petrou, Nikos Kehagias and Ioannis Raptis captivated the audience with their talks, reflecting the exceptional quality and innovation that define their research! At last, but not least, the Head of Education Aimilia Smyrli, delivered an insightful talk on the critical importance of effective science communication in bridging the gap between research and society. A massive thanks to Kosmas Ellinas and Emmanouel Hourdakis, the (best ever) event organizers, and everyone at the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, University of the Aegean for their warm hospitality that made us all feel so welcome!
