A major milestone for European AI took place last week in Brussels, as Commissioner Henna Virkkunen unveiled the European Commission’s new AI Continent Action Plan. The plan is a bold strategy backed by over €200 billion in investments to drive the development and adoption of artificial intelligence across Europe. In his guest column at Kauppalehti, Peter Sarlin highlights how AI is not just about working more efficiently or deploying digital assistants. It’s a transformative opportunity to create entirely new products, services, and business models — fueling much-needed competitiveness and economic growth on the European continent. One powerful example that shows transformer-based models (like those behind ChatGPT) are no longer just theoretical, in areas like healthcare, is the 2024 The Nobel Prize in Chemistry. It was awarded to researchers from Google DeepMind, who used a transformer model to predict the structure of 200 million proteins — a task that would have taken scientists a billion years of manual work. Europe isn’t short on potential startups or innovators. What is needed now, according to Sarlin, is an updated mindset and a deeper understanding of AI’s possibilities. According to the survey conducted by Elinkeinoelämän keskusliitto EK – Confederation of Finnish Industries, the lack of Finnish language skills is rarely a major barrier in recruitment — but language skills still matter. In the past six months, relatively few companies have seen insufficient Finnish skills as a significant obstacle when hiring. Overall, the language skills of job seekers tend to meet companies’ general needs. However, there’s growing concern about the narrowing language choices among young people. As companies become more international, there will continue to be demand for employees who speak languages other than just English. Needless to say, the more diverse and demanding the role, the more important strong foreign language skills become.
