To each of you: we honor your commitment, thank you for your engagement, and applaud your vision. You are the reason this movement has become global. The truth is simple yet urgent: Water is foundational—to human health, food security, energy production, and technological advancement. But conservation alone, particularly of groundwater, is not a solution—it is a delay. Prolonging scarcity is not the same as solving it. What’s more concerning is that in some corners of the world, we’ve seen governments erase language, dilute reports, and adopt a stance of omission—as if silence can substitute for strategy. But the laws of hydrology will not bow to politics. Climate change, population growth, and industrial demands will continue to place stress on freshwater resources, regardless of official rhetoric. This is why Water Positive exists: Not to admire the problem, but to offer solutions. Not to blame, but to build. Our initiative embraces innovation in water reuse, smart desalination, green infrastructure, and global collaboration. We are uniting scientists, engineers, industry leaders, environmentalists, and policy thinkers under one banner: A future where water security is no longer a privilege, but a guarantee! 🤖 💧 Big tech's increased #water use and water pledges As part of their industrial strategies, #governments are seeing #AI as increasingly important for #growth and productivity. #Datacentres use significant amounts of water for cooling and indirectly through their #energy needs⚡️. A large data centre can use between 1-5 million gallons of water per day, that is as much as a town of 10,000 to 50,000 people [1]. In the US, many data centres operate where water is scarce, such as the Western US, where power is cheap [1]. In 2024, Big tech, namely Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Meta, stated they were spending big on data centres with a combined 𝗨𝗦$𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗯𝗻 [2]. Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta have made public commitments to being a good steward by becoming #waterpositive by 2030 [3]. This means they are pledging to put more water into areas where they operate than they take out [4]. For instance, Microsoft is aiming to become water positive including by using #replenishment projects, and as of July 2023, they have invested more than US$16 million in such projects around the world [5]. Nonetheless, in 2022, Microsoft increased its water consumption by 34%, Google by 22% and Meta by 3% [6]. 📃 In terms of water reporting through CDP, Microsoft was not scored in 2023, while Amazon and Apple did not disclose [7]. #Transparency on water use and environmental impacts is important, to assess whether big tech is on the road to reduce their impact and consumption in water-stressed areas, and using water sustainably. ⏩️ Some voluntary or mandatory standards or regulatory mechanisms that could be deployed to reduce corporate #waterfootprints are: 💧 There are reflections with respect to the need of reinforcing existing #waterstewardship initiatives, enhancing guidelines for better monitoring, and even considering a new water stewardship #standard at the organisational level, to define amongst key topics, what water positive, and replenishment should entail [8]. 💧 #FinancialInstitutions should be incentivised for the long-term, such as devising sustainability-linked water loans that drive impact of their portfolio companies on the ground, and that apply credible and verifiable water and #nature KPIs. 💧 Regulators should include #stresstests and #scenarioanalysis of water-related risks in micro-prudential regulations for financial institutions [9-10]. 💧 #Policymakers should make key water disclosure mandatory in all jurisdictions (eg. 🎯 Great News for Water: The Mandatory ESRS Framework Still Elevates Corporate Water Stewardship; Even After the Omnibus Package As of January 1, 2024, the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) are fully in effect. And here's the point: the Omnibus Package didn’t remove these requirements; it only streamlined procedures. Companies working to be Water Positive are not only aligned; they’re ahead. From now on, businesses must report on #waterstewardship and use across operations and value chains.
