Did you know that the first ever international carbon tax applies to the shipping sector? It was approved April 11, by 80% of the United Nations' International Maritime Organization's voting member countries. Effective from 2027, it will target dirtier fuels such as VLSFO or LNG, with the objective of developing the usage of lower-emission alternatives. It includes: ✅ A lower carbon-intensity target rising from 4% in 2028 to 30% in 2035 💰 Charge: $100 per ton of CO2 ✅ An upper target increasing from 17% in 2028 to 43% in 2035 💰 Charge: $380 per ton of CO2 What does this sea change mean for your future shipments? As our North American team kicks off our Annual Team Retreat up in beautiful Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, we’re traveling in true Shippeo fashion—by all modes imaginable. What if US President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs were just the beginning? The next step could be supplementary charges of up to $1.5 million for any Chinese-built boats looking to dock in US ports. As with any similar sudden supply chain disruptions - think COVID and previous tariffs, for example - port congestion is a near certain consequence of these charges, as carriers seek out alternative routes. And a likely knock-on effect could be a shift to other modes, such as air transportation.
