Join the CodeWomen+ project in Barcelona as an ESC Volunteer for 4 months. “Coming to OCC has allowed me to make friends here in Greece, even if we don’t speak the same language.” Meet Mariame, a young woman from Guinea, who arrived in Greece in 2023 and attended our classes and events in our OCC center in Polykastro. 🎯 In this final episode of this season of the Clichés podcast, we hear from Mariame who shares her experience of moving from Guinea to Greece, the activities and connections she’s made in Greece and the hopes she has for the future. Too often, unaccompanied minors become invisible along migration routes, yet they face the highest risks. Already dangerous, these journeys are even more unsafe for minors travelling alone. Without a guardian, minors are at higher risk of abuse, especially girls, along with risks of child labour, robbery and denial of their basic rights to food, shelter, healthcare and education. 🚩A major concern is the lack of legal aid and documentation, as few minors travel with identity papers. Once they turn 18, their situation worsens due to limited access to integration and legal support. In Spain, the main migration routes pass through the Canary Islands, Melilla and Ceuta. In 2024 alone, over 5.000 unaccompanied minors crossed these borders, a 14% increase from 2023📈. At Open Cultural Center, we advocate for the rights of unaccompanied minors by promoting their social and educational inclusion. 🤝We are also part of the CREATE project, funded by the European Union, and developed alongside six other organisations across Greece (Glossomatheia Language Learning & Research Center and Faros), France ( Croix-Rouge française), Cyprus (G.F.C. Generation for Change CY) and Italy ( Oxfam Dedalus Cooperativa Sociale). Together, we equip young migrants with language skills to navigate new environments and connect with their communities. Through tailored lessons, teacher training, and inclusive materials, CREATE supports their inclusion and growth🌱.

💜 This 8th of March, OCC stands in solidarity with women+ to protest against systematic violence produced by patriarchal systems. As Intersectional feminists, we adopt a perspective which recognizes how gender oppression intersects with other axes of domination, such as race, class, migration ad sexuality. In light of this year’s topic, “Care sustains life”, we highlight the importance of care and call for the following measures: ✊🏾 Recognition of the critical importance of care, which is systematically feminized and devalued under patriarchal capitalism. ✊🏾 Structuring safe and strong social mechanisms of labour protection for care workers, who are often inadequately compensated and recognized. ✊🏾 Building fair and inclusive migration policies that protect migrant care workers from exploitation, ensuring their labour rights, dignity, and access to support systems. ✊🏾 Co-responsibility in the provision of quality care, both in interpersonal relationships and social structures. 🌱 It is time to dismantle patriarchal structures which exploit carers: we demand recognition, rights and inclusion for carers around the world! 💜 With International Women’s Day approaching, this week's discussion at the #TalentArena was a strong reminder of the importance of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (#DEI) within the tech sector. 🎙️ Led by Jun M., CodeWomen Project Manager and DEI Manager at Open Cultural Center (OCC), the panel brought together Tatiana Gottlib, Director & Lab Lead at Dynatrace and Corinna G., Software Developer at Porsche Digital, to discuss inclusion and diversity in the tech industry. Tatiana emphasized that #commitment to DEI at an upper management level translates to company #policies that play a crucial role in ensuring equal opportunities, also highlighting how flexible hours and support systems, such as resource groups for employees, are essential for parents and caregivers like her. Corinna stressed that this #adaptability should be the norm, not the exception. She reminded us that diversity goes beyond gender—it includes religion, culture, and work styles. Recognizing this #intersectionality is key to building truly #inclusive workplace. #8M is a celebration, but also a reminder that real inclusion means ongoing commitment and #action, one that transforms policies, cultures, and #opportunities for everyone. 🌱 🤝 Thank you to everyone who joined the session! 🫶

💻 At the #MWC25, we’ve been attending by the inspiring #Diversity4Tech series run by GMSA — highlighting how public-private partnerships can play a key role in bridging digital gaps and how promoting greater #inclusion in tech brings greater innovation! One recurring point was the importance of the “Social” pillar in #ESG, often overshadowed by the Environmental focus, reminding us that human rights, social inclusion, and equitable access must be at the heart of corporate responsibility strategies, something we also recently explored in our recent article about the EU’s new Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD). We are very grateful for these inspiring discussions 👏 , which strongly resonate with our mission to close the gender gap, create opportunities for migrant and refugee people and promote inclusion in the tech sector, through our project CodeWomen+ and MigraCode Barcelona. ✍️Check out our new blog article unpacking the new EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD)—coming into force this year— and exploring what it means for both non-profits and for companies who are looking to comply. This directive will require #EUcompanies (and non-EU companies with over €450 million turnover in the EU) to formally develop their corporate social responsibility strategies, creating new #obligations and #opportunities around addressing social and human rights issues. At Open Cultural Center, we see this as a chance for deeper collaboration between companies and non-profits, especially in sectors like #education and #humanitarian work.
