🚢Welcome to the Maersk family, Adrian Mærsk! Our latest dual-fuel methanol vessel was named today during a ceremony at APM Terminals Maasvlakte II B.V. II in Rotterdam. The vessel was named by its godmother, Stephanie Hart, Executive Vice President & Chief Operations Officer (COO) at Nestlé. Karsten Kildahl, Maersk’s Chief Commercial Officer and the crew of Adrian Mærsk were amongst the attendees to celebrate this exciting milestone🎉. Nestlé ships all of its Maersk ocean cargo using Maersk’s ECO Delivery Ocean product, which cuts greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by over 80% through alternative fuels💚. “The dual-fuel vessels show that the technology for shipping’s energy transition is here. Now, the key lies in the decisions the International Maritime Organization will make, as we urgently need regulation to support the uptake of fuels that significantly reduce GHG emissions. 🚢 At Maersk we see the International Maritime Organization (IMO) MEPC 83 agreement as an important step towards the first global greenhouse gas price structure for any industry. 📹Watch this video filmed live from IMO headquarters for insights from our Head of Europe Public and Regulatory Affairs Simon Bergulf, and Head of IMO and EU Public and Regulatory affairs Sanne Frías Henriksen. This agreement, though leaving aspects unaddressed, provides needed signals to shipowners and fuel providers on the path forward. There’s important work ahead before the anticipated formal adoption in October, especially in defining clear guidelines and ensuring strong enforcement mechanisms are in place. Maersk will now conduct further analysis and model the outcome to fully understand the impact. We look forward to continuing to work with the IMO secretariat and IMO Member States to get this done to keep shipping on its net-zero trajectory.
