This new study, published in Nature Portfolio, provides crucial insights into how quantum states – like those found in superconductors and quantum computers – respond to sudden disturbances. Understanding their stability and sensitivity is key to developing next-generation superconductors and advancing robust, high-performance quantum technologies. A team of researchers from the RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau (Germany), led by Prof. Artur Widera, has studied ultra-cold quantum gases of fermionic Lithium along the BEC-BCS crossover. They investigated the interacting Fermi gases across various interaction regimes after rapid switching optical disorder potentials. Via measuring the quantum hydrodynamic by expansion of the quantum gas, the long-range phase coherence is quantified. The Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) exhibits significant resilience against disorder quenches (rapidly switching on/off the disorder field), whereas the long-range phase coherence of the unitary Fermi gases is destroyed and does not revive. This is contrary to the static properties of the disordered BEC-BCS crossover, which differ strongly from their observations of the time-dependent nonequilibrium case.
