🌱⚡Gaining momentum for green ammonia and #efertiliser in Ethiopia Over the past three days, we explored the potential for domestic #greenammonia and e-fertiliser production in Ethiopia. With rising natural gas prices driving up fertiliser costs, harnessing #greenhydrogen for e-fertiliser production could be a game-changer— strengthening Ethiopia’s #foodsecurity and improving its trade balance. Our training brought together participants from the Ministry of Water and Energy, the Ministry of Agriculture, research institutes, universities, and the private sector. Together, we examined new technology options, economic feasibility, #sustainability considerations, and #policy and financing frameworks. Through these discussions, we developed a comprehensive SWOT analysis and a shared vision with key milestones to guide future efforts. To provide critical context, 🔹 Kaleb Tadesse, Ministry of Water and Energy presented the current status of Ethiopia’s #PtX strategy. 🔹 Shimelis Eshetu, Ministry of Agriculture outlined the country’s #fertiliser import strategy. To broaden the perspective on #sustainableagriculture, we also explored #biofertiliser innovations and their role in improving soil fertility: 🔹 Dr Wondimagegne Mamo Mengistu, Bio and Emerging Technology Institute presented zeolite nanofertiliser. 🔹 Dr Yitbarek Wolde-Hawariat, Addis Ababa University introduced waste-to-biofertiliser solutions. 🔹 Dr Asfaw Hailemariam, Founder of the Menagesha Biofertiliser Factory showcased bacteria-in-lignite biofertiliser. A site visit to the Menagesha Biofertiliser Factory gave participants firsthand insights into production and distribution and marketing to smallholder farmers. To learn from international perspectives, 🔹 Vahid Monadjem, TalusAg shared insights on decentralised green ammonia production at the farm level. 🔹 Prof Ricardo Ruether, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Brazil highlighted the falling costs of solar PV, expanding installation capacities, and the potential for #agriPV and green hydrogen production. A huge thank you to the Ethiopian-German Energy Cooperation, especially Samson Tolessa, Helina Nicodimos Haileselassie, and Tadesse Shiferaw, for the invitation. Special thanks to Stephan Lidsba, GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti and Rebecca Alt, German Embassy Addis Ababa for opening the training. 🌍 Exciting dialogue with Nepal at the #BETD25! At the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue last week, the PtX Hub had the pleasure of engaging in a meaningful dialogue with a delegation from Nepal about their ambitions to produce #PtX products. The delegation, led by Mr Suresh Acharya, Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation (MoEWRI), and H.E. Dr Shail Rupakheti, Nepalese Ambassador in Berlin, highlighted the strong business case for e-fertiliser (ammonia fertiliser produced with #greenhydrogen) in Nepal: ✅ Green energy potential: With its abundant #hydropower resources, Nepal boasts a green grid and is on track to achieve overcapacity in renewable power. ✅ Agricultural significance: #Agriculture is the backbone of the Nepalese economy, employing 60% of the labor force and contributing 24% to GDP. ✅ Fertiliser challenges: Currently, Nepal relies entirely on fertiliser imports from India, facing frequent shortages and delays during critical growing seasons. In a productive discussion with Frank Mischler, PtX Hub Director, we concluded that the best path forward is to first conduct a training session on #PtX and e-fertiliser, ensuring all stakeholders have a solid knowledge to make the potential a reality. Following this, a pre-feasibility study should gather data on Nepal's agricultural sector and current #fertiliser usage, laying the groundwork for discussions on private sector investment in #efertiliser production in Nepal. We are excited and ready to support this important endeavor! Let's work together to harness the potential of renewable energy for sustainable agriculture in Nepal! 🌱
