On Monday, U.S. poultry industry experts and researchers discussed the rapid spread of highly infectious Avian flu, its effect on egg prices throughout the country, and necessary prevention mechanisms for the future. Panelists Robert Yaman (Innovate Animal Ag), Jennifer Nuzzo (Brown University School of Public Health), and Kay Russo (RSM Consulting) advocated for vaccination, close monitoring, and increased data visibility across sectors to solve the crisis and prevent future outbreaks. Together with our Dutch customers, Pluriton and Ter Heerdt kuikens en hennen as well as Verbeek hatcheries international, we are proud to support the industry's move towards a more sustainable, animal-friendly, and efficient egg production without chick-culling. Very recently, the Dutch poultry sector and government presented an innovative roadmap to phase out chick culling for table eggs by 2026. Our customers, the majority of commercial Dutch laying hen hatcheries, have already been producing in-ovo sexed chicks with the Genus Focus since last year and are proud to be part of this innovative sector-wide change. Thank you to Michael Däuber and Ulrich Schumacher as well as the rest of the Bioland e.V. team for organizing an incredibly valuable and fun Bioland Geflügeltagung this week. 🐓 In just two days, we were able to gain an impression of recent developments, trends, and challenges in the industry, and to make new connections. These were our highlights: 🐔Visit to Konrad Halder’s Bio- Geflügelhof natürlich-Bio-Ei GmbH, an egg packer and distributor enabling smaller laying hen farms to sell to big supermarket chains such as EDEKA ZENTRALE Stiftung & Co. KG. 🐔Visit to laying hen farm Geflügelhof Rothäusle, where Lohmann Brown and Lohmann Sandys get raised in three stationary and two mobile chicken coops by resilient Renate von Sanden and her dedicated team. 🐔Presentation by Bart Stokvis & Hans van Sleeuwen from Hendrix Genetics Layers on breeding sustainable hens with longer lifecycles. Bart and Hans delivered a great insight into the breeding process (it can take up to 10 years to develop a new, reliable phenotype) and provided feeding tips that support longer production cycles (e.g. It is essential to start feeding correctly as early as week 17-30). 🐔Presentation by Björn Andersson from LOHMANN Deutschland on breeding robust laying hens for (not only) the organic sector. We learned how Lohmann breeders stress test their breeding stock e.g. by placing food and water further just far enough away from the nests to represent a challenge to the hens. Methods like these allow the breeder to select hens suitable for breeding more easily. 🐔Connecting with organic laying hen farmers from across Germany and learning about their biggest challenges. These included extreme weather fluctuations, prices, rising costs, an increasing number of regulations, and trouble in the distribution of eggs, but especially of the males that are still being raised in the organic sector. Attending Bioland e.V. Geflügeltagung was truly insightful and a great way to connect with people from the organic poultry sector. We are excited to see the German organic poultry industry evolve further and further and are looking forward to what the future holds.

Meet our COO Benjamin Rauser! We stole some of his time and asked him a couple of questions. 💡 Check out the images below for a snapshot of our chat, or dive into the full conversation here: ❓Hi Benjamin, can you tell us a bit about your professional background and about what brought you to Orbem? I started off my career as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company. For more than 10 years now, I have been building and scaling start-ups. In my last job, I was COO at zolar, a photovoltaics start-up, where I built the Operations function and drove revenue up 20-fold. I heard of Orbem in the beginning of 2024 through an investor who introduced me to Pedro, the CEO. After the initial 30-minute Orbem-intro from Pedro on a Friday evening, I was instantly on fire. I sat down over the weekend to collect my thoughts and hypotheses for scaling the company. Orbem is truly innovative, something I have seen very rarely. This is the first time in history that the power of MRI technology can be used to look inside almost anything and make information-based decisions in less than a second. The potential is simply endless. I am extremely excited to scale this technology and bring it to everything and everyone! ❓What would you like to achieve with Orbem's team? What are your goals? I will ensure that Orbem not only grows, but scales. I will also have a very close look at our installations, maintenance and service, supply chain, business processes, quality standards and I will drive measurability through the organization. At the end of the day what can't be measured can't be improved. I am happy when our customers are happy. ❓And maybe something personal? After working in Berlin for the last 4+ years, I am super happy to be back in my hometown, Munich. I live here with my family and our pet tortoise, Donny. 🌟 We appreciate your time Ben!
