As our team works tirelessly on our experiment design, we are excited to share a small infographic on parabolic flights and experiments, aimed at a non-aerospace audience (Feel free to share it with younger space enthusiasts!) Hope you find it interesting and informative. This is part of a broader effort from our team to try to reach more people with our experiment and draw greater interest, especially from the youth, towards space sciences. If this captures your interest, we also have links to resources from the ESA Academy that can guide candidates on how to launch their own experiments with the ESA Academy Experiments Programme. We are also presenting and hosting a small booth this #SpaceDay on 12 April at the Technical University of Munich campus in Ottobrunn - If you're in the area, drop in and say Hi!

Magnetohydrodynamic Vortex-Inducing Photobioreactor Experiment | ESA Academy Experiments Programme 24/25
Info
The Magnetohydrodynamic Vortex-Inducing Photobioreactor Experiment (MVIPER) investigates the angular speed, flow characteristics, and bubble-moving ability of a magnetohydrodynamically induced vortex in an algae-suitable nutrient solution within a circular small-scale photobioreactor geometry. The experiment is intended for the ESA Academy Experiments Programme 2024/25 and operates under the support and supervision of the Professorship of Human Spaceflight Technology of the Technical University of Munich.

Excited for our team to be featured on ESA Academy 's article on the teams taking part in this year's ESA Academy Experiments Programme! We're looking forward to doing some amazing science and sharing it with the world, starting from our kick-off hosted by Novespace in Bordeaux! We're thankful for the support of TUM - Human Spaceflight Technology, European Space Agency - ESA and Novespace! and Congrats and good luck to our fellow teams CAVE 0g - Cavitational Emulsification in zero gravity , VSTARS STUDY, GRASP and Skywalker! Big things are coming - Stay tuned!
🚀 We are thrilled to present you the five new teams selected for this year ESA Academy Experiments Programme! 🎊 🦾 Skywalker Team from Aalborg University, Denmark 🛰️ GRASP Team from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy 👩🚀 V-STARS Team, a collaboration between Birkbeck, University of London and the University of Kent, UK 💧 CAVE 0g Team from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia 🛫 MVIPER Team from the Technical University of Munich, Germany From space robotics to space debris and astronauts’ life in space, they are all working on amazing projects that will push the boundaries of space research and technology. 🎓✨ 💫 The official kick-off at end of February was a blast, and the teams at ESTEC took part in exciting hands-on activities within the ESA Technology Robotics Lab, where they will be testing their experiments. 🤖 The teams will be now supported by the ESA Academy, mentors from the European Low Gravity Research Association, and experts from various platforms to refine their experiments. 👩🔬🌟 🚀 Read the full story of these exceptional teams: https://lnkd.in/duqAyHNb #ESAAcademy

We are glad to announce that MVIPER has been selected to fly on a parabolic flight to study a novel magnetohydrodynamic vortex photobioreactor concept as part of the European Space Agency - ESA Academy Experiments Programme 2024-25! We are incredibly excited about this project and are grateful to ESA Academy for accepting our proposal! Our team is currently preparing to travel to Bordeaux, France, for the kick-off of the project, and to familiarize themselves with parabolic flight operations on board the Novespace A310 ZERO-G. We look forward to continue sharing this exciting journey with you all! Image credits: Novespace AG/Airbornefilms

𝐖𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝! Seasons Greetings from MVIPER! As we approach the peak of the Holiday season, our team has been informed that our experiment has been Shortlisted for the ESA Academy Experiment Programme 2024-25! What this means for our team is that we will soon be presenting our proposal in full detail and, in the meanwhile, begin bringing our concept to life. But for now, we are thankful to our team members and supervisor Gisela Detrell who are all taking a well-deserved break this holiday season. We wish you all happy holidays, and hope your 2025 is as exciting as ours! Big things coming ahead!

Danke to Prof. Gisela Detrell and Prof. Álvaro Romero Calvo for the guidance and support throughout this project. It is a lot of fun to work on this research, combining numerical and experimental analyses on magnetohydrodynamic and diamagnetic phase separation in photobioreactors. Stay tuned for news about this research at #ICES2025 and through MVIPER, a proposal for the #ESA Academy Experiments Programme 2025.
Congratulations to Matthias Kura for successfully defending his semester MS thesis at the Technical University of Munich! He has been co-advised by Prof. Gisela Detrell and myself to develop novel liquid/gas separators for microalgae applications in microgravity. His work shows the same attention to detail and creativity as he demonstrated back when he was a student at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Matthias!
