It’s pretty well accepted that multitasking slows us down. There’s even mathematical proof: working on multiple things in parallel is less efficient than finishing one piece at a time. The simple mantra "Stop starting, start finishing" captures this perfectly. It’s a key principle for improving efficiency, quality, teamwork, and overall satisfaction. Henrik Kniberg gave a clear and entertaining explanation of this concept (see https://lnkd.in/eS52R-pR). If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s 7 minutes well spent! Another related concept comes up when we talk about how we plan software projects: Horizontal slicing focuses on building system layers—like UI, frontend/backend, or on the data side: ingestion, transformation, reporting—before delivering any complete functionality. It's essentially a promise: "All value will come faster... once everything is in place". Vertical slicing, on the other hand, focuses on delivering single small, but complete, end-to-end value that span all layers from the start. It doesn't assume we know everything up front. Instead, it embraces learning as we go, allowing patterns to emerge naturally through delivery and iteration. Here’s the interesting connection: "Stop starting, start finishing" implies vertical slicing, i.e., if your goal is to reduce work in progress and deliver value first, vertical slices are the way to go. The proof? Just go back to Kniberg’s smiley faces. Finishing one smiley is an end-to-end delivery—a vertical slice. Creating all the eyes first, then all the mouths, etc. shows progress on all fronts (the horizontal layers), but it's just work-in-progress until the very end. Therefore, vertical slicing leads to the same benefits as "start finishing". And for those who’ve seen the video—here’s the visual to bring it all together: 1. Going use case by use case (vertical slicing) results in the top line from the video—where value is delivered incrementally and visibly. 2. Going layer by layer (horizontal slicing) gives you the bottom line—lots of work in progress, but no real value until the very end.

Our data shows that while 70% of all lower body purchases online are for jeans, denim has a 2x higher return rate compared to other categories. For our denim-heavy retailers, 80% of lower body size recommendations are for jeans. In this confusing apparel category, consumers need support.
