What are biological condensates? 💦 Liquid-like droplets that spontaneously form inside cells, including the cells in the brain! 🧠 This phenomenon, originally discovered at the MBL during the 2008 Physiology course, could someday lead scientists to better treatments for neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's. 👥 Condensates have spawned a "metaverse" of collaboration between MBL scientists and visiting researchers, centered around MBL Senior Scientist Jennifer Morgan and Dragomir Milovanovic of the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE). 🔬 Morgan and Milovanovic both study synapses, the critical contact points where nerve cells communicate. 📲 Read more about their work: https://bit.ly/4j297g8

🚨 New research alert! 🚨 Our latest study here at The University of Bonn and the Systems Medicine Department at German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), published in Nature Medicine, reveals just how dramatically diet influences health! In collaboration with Radboudumc and Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) University, we found that : 🍟 Participants who switched to a #WesternDiet exhibited an increase in inflammatory proteins in their blood, alongside activation of biological processes linked to lifestyle diseases. Their immune cells also responded less effectively to pathogens. 🌿 Meanwhile, those who switched to a #AfricanHeritageDiet or consumed the fermented drink showed a reduction in inflammatory markers. Some of these effects persisted even four weeks later, indicating that short-term dietary changes can have long-lasting effects. With rising rates of #cardiovascular disease, #diabetes, and chronic #inflammation, these findings have major implications, not just for Africa but globally. Our research underscores the importance of studying traditional diets that were until now underexplored. The 7th Joint Dresden DZG Symposium (March 27, 2025) brought together young and experienced scientists of the Deutsche Zentren der Gesundheitsforschung (DZG)! As a research location, Dresden unites four DZG centers: #DKTK, Paul-Langerhans-Institut Dresden of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD e.V.), Deutsches Zentrum für Kinder- und Jugendgesundheit (DZKJ) and Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen (DZNE). This year, the DZKJ partner site Leipzig/ Dresden was excited to join the symposium for the first time, introduced by site director Antje Körner. The event provided an excellent platform for local scientist to identify synergies and develop DZG-overarching research strategies. Young researchers, in particular, had the opportunity to showcase their expertise in a dedicated session. Forschung für die Zukunft: Kann ein einzelner Bluttest das Alzheimer-Risiko vorhersagen? Wir unterstützen ein wegweisendes Projekt unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Dr. Monique M.B. Breteler am Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen (DZNE) Bonn gemeinsam mit Prof. Dr. Julia Neitzel, PhD vom Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam. Ziel ist es, zu untersuchen, ob ein einzelner Bluttest künftige Veränderungen des Gehirns und des Gedächtnisses vorhersagen kann und ob wiederholte Tests diese Vorhersage verbessern.
