Yesterday, we joined fellow members of the ClusterAllianz.NRW in presenting the strategic paper “Cluster.Zukunft.NRW” to Minister Mona Neubaur, Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia. As one of the actors within this newly formed alliance, the Circular Valley Foundation supports the paper’s core message: clusters are essential drivers of innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness in NRW. Formed in 2024, the ClusterAllianz.NRW brings together cross-industry cluster organisations and networks from across the state to foster exchange, cooperation, and joint positioning toward policymakers and stakeholders. It is a strong voice for innovation and economic transformation – and a platform for sharing insights, building bridges across sectors and technologies, and shaping future-ready ecosystems. Whether it’s the circular economy, green technologies, digitalization, or resilient value chains, clusters like Circular Valley play a key role in making transformation happen. As part of the TraWeBa consortium, we offered and co-organized the workshop "Practical Insights into Battery Recycling and Material Cycles", held at the eLab of RWTH Aachen University in collaboration with PEM Motion and PEM RWTH Aachen University. This event provided a unique opportunity to explore the entire battery recycling process—from the safe disassembly of deep-discharged automotive battery systems to discussions with industry experts on best practices and challenges. Participants experienced firsthand how innovative technologies and processes are shaping the future of circular battery value chains. The transition to a circular battery economy requires strong collaboration between research, industry, and innovation hubs like TraWeBa. We are proud to contribute to this transformation and to advancing sustainable solutions for the implementation of the R-strategies in the battery value chain. We not only promote collaboration between startups and established companies but also between the established companies themselves. Experts come together in our project groups to develop sustainable strategies for various industries. One of these is called Circular Construction and has now met for a workshop. The transformation of the construction industry towards sustainability and circularity is one of the major challenges of our time. In our Circular Construction project group, experts from the entire value chain are working together to drive forward circular economy in the built environment - with a clear focus on pragmatic implementation and scaling. The aim is to preserve the value of existing buildings and building materials for the long term and develop future-proof business models. Real-world projects are used as laboratories for transformation. Innovations through new collaborations and dialogue with all stakeholders are promoted through networking across the value chain and stakeholder groups.. The group covers a broad spectrum: - All company sizes from young startups to family businesses with a long tradition to large construction corporations - All stages of the value chain from raw material extraction to construction products, architects, engineering, general contractors, landlords, dismantling and recycling - All stakeholders from research to companies, associations, NGOs and politics - Our neighbors Vlaanderen Circular from Flanders and Cirkelstad from the Netherlands At the most recent workshop, we: - Identified the “who's who” in circular construction in the Rhine-Ruhr region - Discussed the common goal: Material preservation = value preservation! - Defined the next steps for implementing real-world projects In addition, the first two projects have gained additional momentum and and active contributors: - Regional value chain for the use of recycled material in mineral building products - Circular construction for affordable housing - the example of the Schellenbeck residential park in Wuppertal Would you like to become part of the network and participate in future projects?
