“The question we face is not if transformation is necessary – but how we will lead it”, opened Werner Lang, Vice President for Sustainable Transformation at the Technische Universität München, at the final conference of NEBourhoods - New European Bauhaus Lighthouse. For him, the project exemplifies what transformation in #Europe can and should look like: “collaborative, bold, and deeply human.”
Over the two-years, #NEBourhoods formed a laboratory for socio-ecological #transformation, in which small networks of stakeholders developed innovations – processes, methods, and tangible implementations – guided by the three essential values of the New European Bauhaus (NEB): #beautiful, #sustainable, #together.
Fostering connection and empowerment
Together with international guests from other NEB projects and an engaged professional audience, the role of the NEB as a driving force for future-oriented urban development in the spirit of the #EUGreenDeal was explored during the closing conference at Hochschule München. This calls for a new mindset shaped by mutual care, connectivity, and #empowerment. Implementation, in turn, is not based on rigid blueprints, but on a courageous, active and experimental exploration of new ways of living together. “A principle of co-responsibility that gives rise to a new quality”, Elisabeth Merk, Chief Planner of the City of Munich, points out.
The NEBourhoods replication handbook “NEBourhoods for Tomorrow” (https://lnkd.in/gW2WaxfC), published during the conference, is intended as inspiration for exploring these new forms and as an initial impetus for experiments.
Let's keep the momentum going!
In the context of NEBourhoods, the potential for continuing NEB approaches and projects was identified in the dynamics of socio-ecological transformation in urban areas, processes of social innovation, and opportunities offered by entrepreneurial education. Based on these impulses, concrete and feasible next steps and focus topics were developed in workshops.
Transformation begins in our #neighbourhoods. Let's start straight away.
