30 Years of Medical Technology with Passion and Precision – Our MedLab Celebrates Its Anniversary! 🎉 From the first hip prosthesis to cutting-edge testing equipment, our medical device lab at Applus+ IMA has represented quality, innovation, and safety for 30 years. 1985 – The Origin: Karl Marx University Leipzig approached us for support in research on artificial joint replacement. This led not only to our first project – testing polyurethane as a material for artificial acetabular cups – but also to our first contracts: friction and wear testing of endoprostheses for VEB Keramische Werke Hermsdorf. 1986 – A New Field Emerges: The development of a testing method for the world’s first artificial intervertebral disc marked the beginning of a new chapter for us: specialization in strength and wear testing of implants. 1994–1995 – Official Founding: In 1994, our medical testing lab was established. Prof. Dr. Hanel declared, “We want to become the first accredited test lab for endoprostheses in Germany.” – And we succeeded! In 1995, we received our first accreditation from ZLG. 1996–2006 – Growth and Expansion: To gain visibility, we toured through Germany, joined the DIN Standards Committee, and acquired major testing systems, including the MTS MINIBIONIX and KS4 knee wear simulator. Testing became increasingly "surgical" in nature, as human implants were examined under operating room conditions. 2018 – Relocation and Test Bench Development: Modernization and innovation continued with the commissioning of our first in-house developed wear simulator – the Kx8. It is used for wear testing of knee, ankle, and anatomical shoulder joints, as well as fatigue testing of patella components. 2021–2023 – Going Global: In 2021, we laid the foundation for our medical testing laboratory Applus+ Shanghai. Our team produced two wear simulators – the Kx8 and Hx12. A year later, the Shanghai medical device testing lab received accreditation. 2024 – Continued Advancement: We commissioned the multi-station test system Hx12, significantly expanding our capacity for wear testing of hip, shoulder, and ankle joint implants. Looking Ahead: With nearly 100 testing procedures, Applus+ IMA continues expanding. Since April, we have added a new universal testing machine for quasistatic tests in axial and torsional directions, along with a pin-on-disc test stand – enabling us to perform screw and wear testing among others in accordance with ASTM G99. Another Hx12 simulator will be launched in July. From a university research project to an internationally sought-after testing laboratory, we proudly ensure implant safety every day. Happy 30th, MedLab and many thanks to our team, partners, and supporters! Applus+ Laboratories #Innovation #Anniversary #ApplusIMA #ImplantTesting #MedicalDevices

Review of our Applus+ IMA Inside - Insights into the future of aircraft development Last Thursday, our anticipated Applus+ IMA Inside took place! This event allows our employees to look behind the scenes of other departments and gain valuable insights into our projects - this time from our departments Structural and Component Testing and Digital Solutions. The focus was on the innovative ‘Rapid EF Enablers’ research and development project, which aims to shorten aircraft development times, including the time-consuming process of large-cell fatigue testing for structural components. Together with Airbus, Zeiss and HBK, we worked on reducing downtimes in testing processes. After Ron Buchholz, Managing Director of Applus+ IMA, officially opened the event with a warm welcome to the staff, Silvio Nebel gave an overview of ten current research topics that are currently being researched in the structural area. These are focussed primarily on hydrogen drive systems and faster digital testing and approval processes. Mirko Sachse then gave detailed insights into the ‘Rapid EF Enablers’ research project. Our shell test bench was used to carry out the tests. This makes it possible to precisely simulate all relevant loads that occur during a flight - including take-off and landing - in order to be able to make comprehensive statements about changes in the material. An optical multi-camera measuring system was installed for the project by Zeiss on this special test rig, which we have already been using for 10 years. In addition, our partner HBK has integrated its latest measuring sensors for forces and strain sensors. To ensure fast and comprehensive data availability, our colleague Tian Zhao has developed a data acquisition system that optimises the recording of time-cycled data streams and their management. We have christened this system ‘Hamster’ internally, as it tirelessly ‘hamsterises’ data. Real-time test data can be fully recorded and analysed in parallel or after the tests. We will be developing a new commercial product for our customers from this new data acquisition system in the future. After the presentations, all participants went into the test hall to check out their theoretical knowledge in real life on the shell test bench. At the end of the day, all participants got together and discussed the Applus+ IMA Inside over popcorn and refreshing drinks. A host of exciting innovations await us. Keep your eyes open for our next project presentations in the area of research and development! Applus+ Laboratories #Event #Inside #Aircraft

#AIX2025 #Nachhaltigkeit #Bahnfahren
