The team at Baubot swapped tools for pens and let their robot sign postcards. I am officially a Baubot-Groupie now ;). Some thoughts on robotics at BAUMA: There were already quite a few robots for construction sites — and you can really feel that the construction industry is starting to open up to robotics. But here’s a thought I couldn’t leave behind: 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐮𝐦𝐚 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟖? We’re in. Furthermore, Sika impressed us not only with its innovative vision, but with how approachable and open the event was. They created real space for honest exchange between solution providers and practitioners — the people who deal with construction challenges every day. We had direct conversations with on-site users, who shared where they see bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and urgent need for automation. These were golden insights — and we’ve already started thinking about how to turn them into action. At Aiina Robotics, we lean strongly toward the second. Here is why: 💭 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧? Pragmatism is a philosophy rooted in action and outcomes. Coined in the late 19th century by thinkers like Charles Peirce, it argues that the truth or value of an idea lies in its practical consequences. It’s not about how elegant or human-like a solution is—it’s about whether it works in the real world. 🔧 𝐒𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧? Applying this philosophy to robotics, we do not focus on building human-like robots that could do everything, but on building machines that actually solve specific, real-world problems—reliably, affordably, and at scale. Thus, our pragmatic-robot-philosophy is built around three pillars: 𝟏. 𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐤-𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧: Pragmatic robots are created with one specific job in mind, not to imitate humans. In our case: removing damaged concrete, and doing it faster and safer than manual methods. 𝟐. 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦: Instead of chasing humanoid features, we design based on the environment and the task. This leads to more stable, robust, and adaptable machines for rough job site conditions like construction sites. 𝟑. 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭-𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲: Pragmatic robots aren’t just lab prototypes. They’re built to be used by real crews, in real conditions, tomorrow—not “someday.” Think plug-and-play, not years of training and integration. This concept is often overlooked in a world fascinated by humanoids. Yes, humanoid robots are visually impressive and technologically ambitious. But do we really need a bipedal robot to climb scaffolding and swing a hammer—when a mounted, modular machine could do the same task safer, cheaper, and more efficiently today?

#𝐀𝐢𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐈𝐧𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟏𝟖: 𝐀 𝐆𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐬𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 (𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲.) Last week, I had the chance to pitch Aiina Robotics on the Deep Tech Stage at START Summit in St. Gallen (organized by START Global) – and as the photo shows, it may or may not have unlocked some futuristic vision (light literally coming out of my eyes 👀✨). And honestly? That’s how it felt. START Summit gave me a crystal-clear view into where deep tech is headed – and I left buzzing with ideas, questions, and a lot of excitement. Three startups especially blew me away: 🔹 Hemetron, developing portable, affordable blood diagnostics based on smart microfluidics. Imagine diagnostics without needles, pain, or big lab setups—just a drop of blood, anywhere, anytime. 🔹 Firefly Fusion - aiming to deliver the fastest, most reliable, and cost-effective path to burning plasma, making fusion energy not just a dream, but a deployable reality. Their vision? A world where we can plug into fusion on demand, decarbonize everything, and make energy abundance a reality. It’s so ambitious, it feels like sci-fi—except they’re actually building it. 🔹 a-metal, making metal 3D printing scalable, affordable, and lightning-fast. No more industrial-sized price tags—just elegant, efficient production that brings additive manufacturing to the mainstream. Hats off to these teams—what you're building is bold, important, and deeply inspiring. And as if that wasn’t enough, I also got to meet someone who's become a bit of a hero to us at Aiina: Daniel W. Dippold. We’ve been quoting his thoughts from Unicorn Bakery podcasts in our team meetings for weeks—discussing how to avoid burnout, sleep better, and stay productive in startup chaos. Then suddenly: I meet him. At START Summit. Just a week later. Thank you Daniel for the real talk, your openness, and your energy—it stuck.

While some say “𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞,” we saw something very different at the Bayerischer Bauindustrieverband e.V. event last week: a room full of industry leaders who are ready to not only listen to the future, but shape it at the forefront. My co-founders Nicola Kolb, Julian Hoffmann, and Claus Carste (obviously all in 🦺) pitched Aiina Robotics alongside other forward-thinking startups, showing how our AI-powered construction robot is built to make job sites safer, smarter, and more productive. As a Technische Universität München spin-out, research is deeply embedded in our DNA. We took a break from our usual start-up grind and did a team event to try indoor golf (Nicola Kolb, Claus Carste, Julian Hoffmann). None of us had played before, so it was a fun challenge with a lot of missed swings, some questionable techniques, and a good amount of laughs. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐟? Because learning something completely new outside of our daily work helps us stay curious, open-minded, and adaptable—qualities that are just as essential in a start-up as in sports. Stepping away from work often sparks fresh ideas and new perspectives when we return.
