❔  "Implementing the transition – What will make the difference?"   This key question sparked inspiring discussions at the Forum for the Future of Agriculture in Brussels. Agora Agriculture Director Harald Grethe shared three essential messages: 1️⃣ Farmers must be remunerated for providing public goods such as biodiversity, climate protection, and animal welfare. 2️⃣ Smart data can support in reducing administration: Monitoring the provision of public goods must avoid new administrative burdens. Satellite imagery can support efficient monitoring, for example, by assessing field size, crop rotation, landscape diversity or soil organic matter. 3️⃣ Evidence-based and pragmatic policy is crucial for sustainable solutions: Many farmers and environmentalists want good solutions to the challenges ahead. Die neue #Bundesregierung steht vor großen Aufgaben in der Agrar- und Ernährungspolitik: Wie können #Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und Einkommen in der Landwirtschaft gestärkt werden, während sie gleichzeitig mehr zu Umwelt- und #Klimaschutz beiträgt?   Agora-Agrar-Direktoren Christine Chemnitz und Harald Grethe beschäftigen sich mit dieser Frage in einem Meinungsbeitrag für AGRA Europe Presse- und Informationsdienst GmbH: Drei Prämissen sind entscheidend: 1️⃣ Ernährungssicherheit, Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und Nachhaltigkeit gehen zusammen, wenn Betriebe für die Produktion öffentlicher Güter entlohnt werden.   2️⃣ Klimaneutralität beinhaltet Chancen für die Landwirtschaft, denn Biomasse wird in vielen Sektoren zunehmend gefragt. 3️⃣ Neben einer produktiven Landwirtschaft, stärkt auch ein nachhaltiger Konsum die strategische Autonomie der EU. Eine Agrarpolitik, die Umwelt- und Klimaschutz vergütet, ist nicht nur ökologisch sinnvoll, sondern auch wirtschaftlich nachhaltig. Wichtige Elemente dafür sind eine Gemeinsame Agrarpolitik der EU (GAP), die stärker auf öffentliche Leistungen ausgerichtet ist, eine Förderung des kooperativen Agrarumweltschutzes 🤝 und eine effizientere Düngepolitik. 🐖 Auch in der Nutztierhaltung müssen Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und Tierwohl miteinander vereinbart werden. 📝 Aus diesem Grund bleibt das Borchert-Konzept aktuell. 🍎 Zudem schlagen die Autoren ein Bundesprogramm für den Obst- und Gemüseanbau vor, dass die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit regionaler Produzenten stärkt und eine gesunde Ernährung fördert. Die neue Bundesregierung hat die Chance, eine Agrarpolitik zu gestalten, die Planungssicherheit für landwirtschaftliche Betriebe und Anreize für nachhaltiges Wirtschaften verbindet. Just one week before the European Commission is set to unveil its "Vision for Agriculture and Food”, Agora Agriculture, together with AGRA Europe Presse- und Informationsdienst GmbH and Agra Facts convened the event “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐔” in Brussels. We discussed the challenges and potentials of land use in the EU and explored key policies for viable and sustainable rural economies. Our main takeaways from the event are: 💡 Biomass and land are scarce and valuable resources. The demand for biomass is expected to increase substantially in the coming decades, entailing important trade-offs for the use of land. Biomass, therefore, needs to be consumed efficiently. At the same time, a sustainable bioeconomy can both contribute to climate neutrality and open new value chains for the agricultural sector. 💡 The construction industry is on a pathway towards climate neutrality. This involves, among others, substituting fossil-based construction materials with bio-based products. Developing and scaling up such new products requires long-term policy direction and the right price signals. 💡 Young farmers recognise the sustainability challenges and seek to address them. To do so, they need planning security, clear demand-side signals and incentives that create income opportunities from contributing to sustainability. 💡 Setting a robust 2040 emission reduction target for agriculture would contribute to long-term predictability and spur the development of market-based policy instruments leaving space for entrepreneurial decisions. 💡 Constructive dialogue formats are important for bringing key stakeholders together to develop solutions for a future-oriented agricultural and food sector. What is the future role of agriculture and forestry in a sustainable food system and bioeconomy in a climate neutral EU?  Together with PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, EAT, EU Commission and World Bank we shared a panel to discuss this question at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) on 15th - 18th January in Berlin. ↪️ Conclusions: 1️⃣ Healthier and more sustainable diets are crucial for the future development of the bioeconomy and for reaching global sustainability goals. 2️⃣ Agriculture can provide for a wide range of public services and needs to be renumerated to provide these. More enabling policies need to be put in place that incentivise negative emissions, biodiversity protection, animal welfare and other public goods. 3️⃣ Research and technological innovation is key to further developing the bioeconomy. 4️⃣ A biomass action plan may support the prioritisation of biomass uses in light of scarce land and contribute to a more coherent policy framework for the use of biomass, such as by increasing incentives for material used instead of energetic use. We thank Hermann Lotze-Campen, Caterina Ruggeri-Laderchi , Peter Wehrheim and William R.
