QUANTUM DOTS GRAND TOUR @ OFC. We love Quantum Dot Lasers at Optica! Their potential for uncooled operation, no need for isolators and broad flat gain make them a strong contender for the external laser in co-packaged optics. This makes it the ideal laser for datacom transceivers and WDM applications. Last year (2024) we saw Quantum Dots in LPO demos at OFC. This time, after a remark on quantum dots by Andreas “Andy” Bechtolsheim (Arista Networks), we walked the exhibition to see how the Quantum Dot lasers made by Innolume GmbH have already been incorporated by integrators such as Accelink and Genuine Optics. But what are the next steps? We discuss temperature (uncooled) and reliability issues.
