Catalyzing action to reduce methane emissions in the energy, agriculture, and waste sectors
Sobre nosotros
Reducing methane gas is the fastest way to address climate change in the short term. Methane emissions have contributed to roughly 30% of current warming, causing harm to communities around the globe. Reducing methane by 45% is crucial to reducing warming by 0.3 degrees Celsius by 2040 and putting us on a path to a healthy future. While many countries have methane reduction strategies in place, this is the first coordinated approach to methane mitigation funding. We move fast, are nimble, and operate with ambition and vision. The Hub focuses on the energy, agricultural, and waste sectors which account for 96% of human-caused methane emissions. We support ambitious catalytic investments, lay the groundwork for long-term transformation of challenging sectors, and also deliver quick wins in sectors that are ripe for action on the ground. Our actions are global in nature, based out of Santiago, Chile. We focus on the highest emitting sectors and regions.

🌍 Cutting agricultural methane is critical to staying on the 1.5°C pathway—and we can do it faster, together. We’re thrilled to collaborate with the Bezos Earth Fund, ILRI, CGIAR, and global leaders in livestock science through the Low-Methane Livestock Global Initiative. 🔬 The initiative’s goals: • Develop and scale low-methane breeding strategies for cattle, especially in tropical and smallholder systems, • Improve monitoring and trait selection to support national methane targets, • Strengthen data sharing, policy frameworks, and global research infrastructure. This effort is part of EFA, the Enteric Fermentation Accelerator, which intends to find breakthroughs in livestock methane mitigation to expand the mitigation opportunities in the sector, at lower costs, looking to provide wins for farmers who are already at the frontline of the climate crisis. 💡 At Global Methane Hub, we’re already seeing impact: • In India and 18 other countries, our work on feed ration formulation tools empowers farmers with practical, emissions-lowering diets; • In Vietnam, we support rice-methane mitigation with ACCELR and IRRI; • With IDB and CCAC, we help cities across Latin America cut waste methane through innovation and finance. 💬 These examples show how multi-actor, regionally grounded collaborations—like this new initiative—can rapidly drive down methane while improving productivity and resilience. 🌿 Methane may be short-lived, but the solutions we’re building together will benefit generations. Great work by our Scientific Oversight Committee, and our great team Hayden Montgomery Taina Silvestre Santiago Fariña and from Bezos thanks Andy Jarvis Andrew Steer. And shout out too to Charles Brooke #MethaneMatters #EntericMethane #EFA #GlobalMethaneHub #ClimateAction #FoodSystems #LowMethaneLivestock #GHGMitigation #LivestockInnovation #CH4 #ClimateFinance #CollaborationForImpact

The Lemelson Foundation's Climate Action initiative Director, Joel Clement, paid a sobering but crucial visit this week to frontline communities in Brazoria County, Texas. The experience highlighted the human cost of unchecked oil and gas development, and it underscored the fundamental "why" behind our Climate Action efforts. Seeing methane plumes - through optical gas imaging - near playgrounds and churches was a stark reminder of the interconnectedness of local health and global climate. Shares Joel: "These methane plumes are not only turbo-charging climate change, they're an ominous sign of industry's lack of regard for the communities in which they work." Joel's experience in Brazoria County underscores the urgent imperative of The Lemelson Foundation's Climate Action initiative. Driven by the conviction that innovation must serve the most vulnerable, our efforts strategically converge on innovation, justice, and learning. We aim to harness the power of invention and climate justice to forge and expand pathways towards significant emissions reduction by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2050, working collaboratively with partners to build a more equitable and sustainable future. Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/g_Ys3Dks Special thanks to the leaders from Global Methane Hub, GreenLatinos, Liveable Arlington, Better Brazoria, and EARTHWORKS for leading this eye-opening tour of the local and global impacts of an industry eager to expand. We applaud their tireless work, and we're grateful they've shared these powerful experiences and stories with us. #ClimateCrisis #ClimateEmergency #ClimateChange #ClimateJustice #BrazoriaCounty #Methane Camila Thorndike

For the first time, scientists and breeders across the globe are joining forces to slash methane emissions from livestock. Backed by $19.3 million from the Bezos Earth Fund and $8.1 million from the Global Methane Hub, a new initiative will fund research and breeding programs across North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Oceania to help herds emit less methane – naturally. https://lnkd.in/enW4Hdn4

🆕 NEW SCIENCE: UN Environment Programme’s IMEO and partners reveal that a major mine in Australia’s Bowen Basin emits far more emissions than reported. ℹ️ Scientists, including researchers from University of Bremen and Airborne research australia, deployed aircraft in 2022 and 2023 to measure #MethaneEmissions over the mine, which supplies coal for steel production. ➡ They found emissions were 3-8 times higher than estimates based on widely used generic emissions factors. The study shows the value of airborne measurements for verifying emissions reporting for open-pit coal mines in the region. 🔑 Effectively assessing emissions is essential for understanding the scale of the sector’s climate impact, identifying mitigation opportunities and deploying strategies to #CutMethane. This study was initiated and supported by UN Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) to provide policy-relevant insights through peer-reviewed research. There is untapped mitigation potential to #CutMethane in the steel sector ➡ methane from metallurgical coal used in steel production adds a quarter to steel’s total climate footprint and could be vastly reduced at just 1% of the cost of steel. 🟢 IMEO’s Steel Methane Programme aims to set the standard for mitigation, reporting and verification of #MethaneEmissions across the steel supply chain, as well as support companies in setting and achieving ambitious mitigation targets.
