Launching today, the world’s first multisector advocacy movement dedicated to stroke - the Global Stroke Action Coalition - has issued an urgent call to action to address growing inequities in stroke. Already a leading cause of death and disability, without intervention, the global burden of stroke is projected to rise by a further 50% over the next 25 years, claiming 100 million lives and costing US$1.6 trillion each year. https://lnkd.in/e_zz3YGs #StrokeActionNow Bo Norrving Sheila Cristina Ouriques Martins Jeyaraj Pandian Maria (Mia) Fredin Grupper Sharon Epperson Joseph Rukelibuga Melinda B. World Stroke Organization hat dies direkt geteilt
I had the opportunity to visit several hospitals in Iraq, including the new Medical City hospital—a collaboration between Iraq and Korea—located within the Baghdad General Hospital campus. The team is preparing to launch an advanced stroke center, which marks a promising step in enhancing stroke care in the region. I also visited the Emergency Department Training Center, which is fully equipped to train paramedics and healthcare professionals, further strengthening Iraq’s emergency medical services. Additionally, I explored Diwaniyah and Najjar General Hospitals, with the visits expertly coordinated by Dr. Mustafa Al Shahni. During my time in Baghdad, I had the privilege of meeting many senior neurologists, engaging in insightful discussions about the future of stroke care. Moving forward, WSO’s strategy will focus on establishing Stroke Center Certification to further advance stroke treatment and care standards in Iraq.

A rare and powerful meeting at the MENA-VINM conference in Cairo, Egypt, bringing together Prof. Simona Sacco, President of the European Stroke Organization, and Dr. Adel Alhazzany, President of the Middle East and North Africa Stroke Organization. With stroke remaining the leading cause of death and disability globally, there’s an urgent need for advocacy at the upcoming WHA and UNGA meetings to drive action and policy change.

Thank you to all who joined the launch of the Global Stroke Action Coalition today. We heard important messages from stroke experts, people with lived experience, WHO, OECD and NCD Alliance. The coalition is calling on governments attending the 4th High-Level UN Meeting on NCDs in September this year, to commit to five actions: 1. Make stroke a priority in NCD prevention and control strategies 2. Develop National Stroke Action Plans 3. Commit to funding 4. Implement robust stroke monitoring systems 5. Include stroke survivors and caregivers in policy development https://lnkd.in/eApBmXJa #StrokeActionNow Bo Norrving Sheila Cristina Ouriques Martins Jeyaraj Pandian Maria (Mia) Fredin Grupper Sharon Epperson Joseph Rukelibuga Melinda B.
