🌟 SNSF Project Funding Grant Awarded to Milena Sokolowska for Translational Asthma Research 👏 We are proud to announce that PD PhD Dr. med. Milena Sokolowska, Head of Immune Metabolism at the #SIAF, has been awarded a substantial grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF through the Project Funding scheme for the project: "Crosstalk of Metabolism and Immune Tolerance in Allergic Asthma and Viral Infections (COMBO)" 🧬🩻🧑⚕️ This translational research project will explore how metabolic changes in the lung environment, triggered by allergens or viral infections, affect immune responses in allergic asthma. The team will investigate the mechanisms underlying impaired antiviral defense and chronic inflammation, and how allergen immunotherapy may help restore immune balance. 💡While focused on allergic asthma, the project may also provide insights relevant to autoimmunity, chronic infections, obesity, diabetes, and cancer. 🤝 We thank the SNSF for their support, and congratulate Milena and her team: Urszula Radzikowska, Inés Jardón Parages, Nino Stocker, Abhijeet Kulkarni, YEŞİM KAYA, Nuria Contreras Gómez, and Alaa Sherri, MD, as well as their international project partners on this achievement: Prof. Sebastian Johnston, Christian Uggerhøj Wøhlk, Celeste Porsbjerg, Kornel Golebski, Katja Bärenfaller, Marie-Charlotte Brüggen, Peter Schmid-Grendelmeier, Nicola Zamboni, Christoph Messner, Simone Hornemann, Rafael J. Info
SIAF performs basic and translational research in the field of allergies and asthma. Since its foundation in 1988, The Swiss Institute of Allergy and Asthma Research (SIAF) performs applied, basic research in the field of allergies and asthma. Research at the SIAF focuses on patient-relevant translational research and the study of the immunological basis of allergic and asthmatic diseases, which provides a starting point for new preventative and curative treatments in favor of those affected. The SIAF has published over 1'320 research articles and is one of the most cited institutions of its size worldwide. The articles published by the SIAF have been cited 53’700 times. The institute with its approximately 45-50 employees is one of the best in terms of the number of employees or citation divided by budget worldwide. In 2019, 84 scientific papers were published in peer-reviewed international journals with "Impact Factor" or are still in print. The SIAF achieved a total value of the impact factor of 606.373 and an average of 7.2 points per publication. The latest results were also communicated in 26 abstracts at various symposia. Our employees were invited to 62 different seminars and lectures at national and international congresses. SIAF co-workers chaired 27 different international sessions. In addition, 35 scientific posts in international organizations are being occupied by scientists of the SIAF. Furthermore, the SIAF researchers are members of the editorial committees of a total of 16 international journals. #SIAF #allergy #asthma

Very proud of this month’s issue and cover. Asthma# In this issue, Domingo et al., discuss the indirect and direct roles of IgE on airway epithelial cells, with a focus on allergic asthma. Abdu and Xia et al. study the IL-25/IL-17RB pathway as a potential therapeutic target for type 2 inflammatory disorders. Soendergaard et al. categorise patients based on their fractional exhaled nitric oxide response to anti-IL-5 biologics and evaluate the association of these categories with clinical outcomes. Pacheco Da Silva et al. identify exposure profiles for the long-term weekly use of disinfectants and cleaning products by latent class analysis and assess their associations with asthma. Slob et al. investigate whether genotype-guided treatment improves asthma-related outcomes. Doyen and Migueres et al. compare the accuracies of the changes in fractional exhaled nitric oxide concentrations and sputum eosinophil counts in identifying asthmatic reactions induced by occupational agents during specific inhalation challenges. Daud et al. evaluate the role of WNT5a and TGF-β1 in asthmatic airway biopsies and in sputum and bronchial brushings assessed their role in remodelling. Hillson et al. assess the feasibility of point-of-care eosinophil measurements in preschool wheezers and related blood eosinophil counts to symptoms, lung function, and utility in predicting attacks. Hsin et al. assess the diagnostic performance and clinical utility of a single flow cytometry staining of basophils with major aeroallergen components. Martin-Gonzalez et al. identify whole blood DNA methylation markers associated with asthma exacerbations in Europeans. Bilò et al. identify real-world clusters of patients with severe asthma, based on baseline levels of biomarkers, and to understand their predictive role in response to biologics. Hsu et al. investigate the role of CD53 in mast cell responses and rype 2 inflammation. Michils et al. evaluate whether the improvement in FEV1 or the persistence of its deterioration in severe eosinophilic asthma patients on anti-IL-5 is related to a distinct evolution of the mucus score. Esnault et al. investigate whether human blood eosinophils are a source of oncostatin-M and analyze associations between oncostatin-M and airway eosinophilia, lung function, and other mediators in asthma. Hsu et al. conduct a case-control study to evaluate the effect of the exposure to acrylamide on asthma and its phenotypes. Chen et al. evaluate the changes in the features of allergic airway inflammation upon exposure to particulate matter 2.5. Sanchez-Torralvo and Testera-Montes et al. present an algorithm for organ-specific allergen challenges for the phenotyping of chronic respiratory diseases. #Allergy_journal journalallergy.com
