Our solution: breaking the dependency cycle by building autonomy for displaced people

Autonomy and self-reliance Our aim is to promote and enable the transition for displaced people away from dependency towards increased self-reliance, resilience, and development. We need to get away from the charity-driven aid model. Rather, we need to develop platforms, networks, and structures, that enable refugees to make their own decisions and to become autonomous and self-reliant members of our societies again. In other words, we need to find ways to support people to help themselves. This is why all our projects focus on helping people with refugee background to become autonomous, independent and self-reliant members of society again! Glocal Roots in Switzerland In order to become autonomous and self-reliant in Switzerland, people with refugee background need to be included into Swiss society and they need to be able to earn their own living. This is why our projects in Switzerland focus on fostering social and economic inclusion for people with refugee backgrounds. We do this through activities connecting Swiss citizens and ‘newcomers’ as well as through a work integration scheme that we are currently developing. Our projects abroad Glocal Roots efforts abroad focus on supporting refugees living in urban areas as well as in camps to become more autonomous and self-reliant again. We do this by establishing structures, platforms and ‘toolboxes’ that can be used by refugees to become agents of change for themselves and their communities.

The Hub | Kos It’s time for another goodbye… and this one’s just as hard. Our amazing volunteers Meli & Clemens rolled into our lives from Germany in their van and filled the Hub with so much care, dedication, and kindness. 💛 Meli was a true force — sewing beautiful new curtains, building a whole kitchen table from scratch, and fixing anything that needed attention. Her creativity and skills were a gift to the space! 🧵🛠️ Clemens brought a calm and caring vibe. He always paid attention to the little things and made sure everyone felt welcome and supported. 🤗 Together, they made the Hub feel like home, for us and for everyone who walked in. We already miss their smiles and their beautiful energy! ✨ Thank you, Meli & Clemens. We’re so grateful for your time with us. VICTORIA COMMUNITY CENTER | ATHENS 🇬🇷 Today 7th of April, we celebrate World Health Day 🌎👩🏽⚕️ Health is a fundamental human right, yet for many refugees and displaced communities, access to medical care remains a daily struggle. Limited healthcare, language barriers, cultural considerations, asylum status and financial constraints make it difficult to receive the care they need. At our community center, we believe everyone deserves access to healthcare, regardless of their background. That’s why we work alongside partner organizations like @mvi_org and SAMS_hellas to provide medical support, vaccination, mental health resources, and essential health education for those who need it most. Children enjoyed free playing and organized activities, and the women had space to have beauty days, make some jewelry and connect between each other.
