⛴️ Oasis by the Suez Canal, or Mirage in the Desert? Just a week after the IMO’s landmark shipping decarbonisation target, President El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s ambition to lead on green hydrogen. The timing couldn’t be clearer — the world is watching, and Egypt is under the spotlight. ✅ 30+ MoUs signed ✅ Hydrogen strategy adopted ✅ Incentives law passed ✅ SCZone laying the groundwork But let’s be honest: the world won’t wait for more announcements. Final Investment Decisions (FIDs) are what count now. And while the vision is strong, the bottlenecks remain: 💰 High costs 🛳️ No operational green bunkering infrastructure ⚠️ Uncertain offtake With the Suez Canal moving 12% of global trade, Egypt could become the bunkering hub for the green shipping era — but only if projects reach FID, and infrastructure gets built. 📣 The message is simple: We don’t need more concepts. We need execution. We need electrolyser components built in Egypt. We need jobs, skills, molecules — and movement. The Cairo Centre of Excellence for Green Hydrogen is stepping in to bridge the gap between strategy and bankable projects — aligning policy, capacity, and finance. The market is moving fast. Egypt has the fundamentals — land, sun, ports, and political will. Now it’s about turning groundwork into gigawatts, and ambition into action. From Sokhna to the Suez, the momentum is building. But only delivery will define leadership. Jonas Moberg | Joe Williams | Sam Bartlett | Simran SINHA | Vanina Morrison | Flore Schmerber | Krystyna Serdiuk | Green Hydrogen Organisation - GH2

🚢🌍 Big news for global shipping! Today, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreed on draft regulations to cut emissions from global shipping — a major milestone. While the compromise falls short of a universal carbon levy, it lays crucial groundwork for zero and near-zero emissions fuels like green ammonia to take centre stage. 💬 GH2 CEO Jonas Moberg: “The IMO’s decision sends a clear signal to green fuel producers. The framework still needs important detail on emissions calculations and rewards, but momentum is building.” 💬 CWP Global’s Alex Hewitt: “This is a big step. With the right policies and price signals, green ammonia supply will scale rapidly.” The new rules, starting in 2028, introduce emission reduction targets and penalties — albeit with some loopholes for fossil-based alternatives. But green fuels will be able to generate and trade credits, with the IMO set to define reward mechanisms for zero-emission vessels by 2027. 🧭 It is hugely significant that the shipping sector has now agreed the first globally mandated emissions targets for shipping.
