A global study led by #UCalgary researchers shows one in five people who experience a minor stroke or transient ischemic attack will have another stroke within 10 years. Dr. Faizan Khan, PhD, postdoctoral fellow at the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and lead author of the study says these findings are important for ongoing monitoring and lifelong preventative care for stroke risk factors like high blood pressure, long after hospital discharge. The study, spanning 171,068 patients in 20 countries was led by researchers at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, CSM. Neurologist Dr. Michael Hill, MD, principal investigator of the study and #UCalgaryMed professor, notes that as individuals feel better over time, they may question the necessity of medication and lifestyle changes, especially as time passes after their first stroke. The researchers hope these findings will further research on prevention strategies and will serve as a benchmark for enhancing long-term prevention care efforts for patients and health-care providers. The findings are published in JAMA. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g6U_dkqG Libin Cardiovascular Institute | O'Brien Institute for Public Health

University of Calgary researchers have uncovered important clues that could help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. A recent study published in the medical journal Neuron, led by Dr. Minh Dang Nguyen, PhD, and first author Dr. Milene Vandal, PhD, shows how the brain interacts with the vascular system may be key to reducing disease risk. The discovery, which focused on a protein called CD2AP, reveals important information about how the brain interacts with the vascular system and, particularly, the cells that form the brain blood vessels. These findings could dramatically change how the disease is perceived and treated. 👉🏼 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gUgm9F2U Hotchkiss Brain Institute | One Child Every Child #BrainHealth #ResearchMatters #UCalgaryMed

Collaborative research led by Dr. Aaron Goodarzi, PhD'05, is influencing national policy and helping to prevent radon-induced cancers. As Scientific Director of the Evict Radon National Study, Dr. Goodarzi leads a multidisciplinary team that is investigating how people are exposed to the radioactive gas, which is a leading cause of lung cancer. You have to break down silos that traditionally exist in places like universities, research institutions and governments, says Dr. Goodarzi, who believes Canada is at the forefront of this kind of collaboration due in part to its newer, more nimble institutions. Meanwhile #UCalgary is leading research with a major impact, as building codes across Canada are poised to mandate that pro-active radon reduction systems are installed in new residential constructions. “Doing this could be one of the single greatest lung cancer prevention things that has happened since tobacco smoking reduction,” says Dr. Goodarzi. As data gathered by the Evict Radon National Study builds a clearer picture of radon exposure in homes across Canada, it could prevent tens of thousands of potentially deadly cancers over the next decade. ➡️ Read more below about how Dr. Goodarzi’s work is advancing cancer prevention: https://lnkd.in/ga8bzfM4 Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute | Evict Radon #Collaboration #CancerPrevention
