What if we could make affordable housing more energy-efficient, resilient, and comfortable while cutting emissions? That’s exactly what the EnergySPRING Market Transformation Program is doing. Funded by NRCan, this initiative works with Social Housing Providers and Indigenous Communities to scale deep-energy retrofits across Ontario’s low-rise affordable housing sector. How does it help? - Enhances energy efficiency and resiliency - Reduces greenhouse gas emissions - Supports local economic and workforce development Inspired by the globally recognized Energiesprong model, EnergySPRING uses economies of scale to replace aging building components, making homes safer, more efficient, and future-ready. Sustainable Buildings Canada is a huge fan of electrification as key to our collective futures. That said, rather than start with silver-bullet solutions, we always engage in the building decarbonization discussion through the Integrated Design Process (IDP). As we all work to integrate climate concerns into practice, this should not lead us to throw the baby out with the bathwater (ie. a new-ish high-efficiency boiler) nor stop us from pursuing the goal of better buildings that are in best possible condition of energy efficiency and electric / electric-ready. For a more nuanced consideration check out this article published by SBC in collaboration with our Close Collaborators, Cara Sloat and Jack Zhou: https://lnkd.in/gvTBervj
The single best thing you can do to reduce home energy use and emissions is to electrify home heating. Insulation and air sealing can also help but they will have far less impact and they certainly don't have to come first. https://lnkd.in/g9k_qBGZ

This week, EQ had the pleasure of being able to attend Sustainable Buildings Canada's Modeller's Forum. Alongside many other building energy and sustainability experts, SBC fostered a great discussion to allow us to come together and collaborate towards clearer modelling guidelines and practices, and an improved understanding of our best practices. We're grateful for the opportunity to hear from others and share some of our thoughts on obstacles and opportunities towards net-zero and decarbonization, but also to catch up with some good friends! #energy #sustainability #toronto #greenbuildings
