You could say that Seaspan and TOTE Services go way back. ⚓ For more than two decades, TOTE has been a loyal customer at Seaspan’s Victoria Shipyards – working in close partnership as we’ve successfully delivered on a wide range of ship repair and conversion projects, including complex LNG conversion work. Recently, our teams celebrated the completion of work on the Midnight Sun, marking the 15th drydocking of a TOTE Orca Class vessel at Victoria Shipyards, and a special moment for Phil Morrell, Vice President of Marine Operations at TOTE. “I’ve been working with the team at Victoria Shipyards since their beginnings, that’s almost 30 years. It feels good to come back to Victoria time and time again.” For Phil, who has attended every TOTE drydocking, building relationships has been a critical part of his career in the marine industry. “It’s a small industry”, he noted. “The people you work with today are often the same people you'll work with for years to come. It’s been very rewarding to build strong relationships with the Victoria Shipyards team and know that I can rely on them to deliver high quality work, on time, every time.” Read the full story about TOTE and Seaspan’s longstanding partnership on our website: https://lnkd.in/gz7N2777 Photo of the Midnight Sun on the water captured by mariner Corey Wiens. Construction Begins on Made-In-Canada Polar Icebreaker! Today, Seaspan is proud to share that we have cut steel on the Canadian Coast Guard's new heavy Polar Icebreaker, the most complex and capable ship in their fleet. As part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy, this multi-mission vessel will be 100% built in Canada, will support thousands of Canadian jobs from coast to coast, and will be one of the most advanced conventional polar icebreakers ever to be built. This marks the first time a heavy polar icebreaker has been built in Canada in more than 60 years - it will play a critical role in protecting our sovereignty for decades to come. As the only shipyard currently building polar icebreakers in Canada, Seaspan looks forward to delivering this large, complex, multi-mission vessel to the Canadian Coast Guard, and to building more Polar Class vessels for Canada and its allies 🍁 Read the full press release on our website: https://lnkd.in/g8W4xch8

With women currently making up less than 5% of the marine workforce, events like our Women in Marine day are essential in fostering a more inclusive and welcoming workplace. For any young women aspiring to become a mariner, the message was clear: if you want to work in the marine industry, there is a place for you. You can do it. National Engineering Month is held annually in March, serving as a celebration of the heart and soul of engineers – their passion, commitment, and action toward making the world a better place. We’re proud of the skill and dedication that Seaspan engineers bring to work each day - we took the opportunity to meet a few of the engineers helping drive improvement across multiple different projects at Seaspan's Vancouver Shipyards. “Always remember, the sea does not see gender — only skills.” Earlier this month, we were pleased to welcome over one hundred guests for our second-ever Women in Marine event. Participants visited Seaspan Marine's offices to meet our team, gear up in lifejackets to tour Seaspan's tugboats, and test out our state-of-the art tugboat simulators. Later in the day, women from across the marine industry came together to speak to the participants at a networking reception. Thank you to the panel of talented guest speakers for sharing their experiences and offering uplifting words of support – and to BC Ferries, SAAM Towage, Mark's, British Columbia Institute of Technology and all the other industry supporters who came to the event. Only together can we drive change. Read the full recap of the event here ⚓🚢 https://lnkd.in/gGpDX-fr

Which is a greater total distance? A drive to Banff or the length of cables that will be installed on the Joint Support Ship? Earlier this month, the team at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards celebrated the activation of the first of two 440v main switchboards on HMCS Protecteur, a major milestone in the Joint Support Ship’s commissioning schedule. The main switchboards are critical – they control and distribute power from the ship's generators to wherever it's needed, relying on a vast network of cables. At completion, the length of the cables onboard the ship will total over 750km! While this activation process is referred to as a switchboard ‘light off’, it’s about starting up the switchboards (think, lights on) and confirming that the ship can effectively distribute its own power, initially from Shore Power and eventually from its own diesel generators once commissioned. For Simon Sison, Principal, Test Specialist at Vancouver Shipyards, it was a proud moment. “This was the culmination of an immense amount of planning and collaboration across several years of construction on the JSS1 program. Successfully achieving this switchboard light-off is a real moment of celebration for everyone involved.” Now that the switchboard light-off is complete, HMCS Protecteur is now one step closer to the sea trials that are scheduled for later this year.
