Integrated Chemical Process Development
About us
Kingston Process Metallurgy Inc. (KPM) is an integrated contract chemical process development company. KPM integrates lab-based research, backed by a fundamental knowledge of chemistry, process modelling, and economic evaluation to give our clients meaningful results. We assist companies in determining a development plan that leads to clarification of the key operating parameters to give a more accurate estimate of CAPEX/OPEX. As well, KPM does conceptual process design with unit operations including heat and mass balances and flowsheet development. The preliminary process design can then be used by an engineering firm to give a detailed feasibility study and the next stage can be handled in KPM's pilot plant. KPM can help companies with: - Experimental process development and optimization - Techno-economic modeling - Process modeling and flowsheet development KPM owns a 12,000 ft² facility with 5 flexible laboratories, an analytical lab, SEM-EDX, and on-site design and fabrication capabilities for custom test equipment. We also have an additional ~25,000 ft² of piloting space. Clients range from large multi-nationals to start ups. Please contact us at: info@kpm.ca

2025 Kingston Science Fair Great to see a strong presence of KPM as judges for the student science fair - over 10% were from KPM/KM&M. Thanks especially to Ali Crawford for MCing the award ceremony. Lots of special prizes were given out which is a great incentive for students. Our prize for the best (and there were lots) chemical processing themed presentation? A two month internship at KPM at normal rates. One at a time is how we will get excellent talent into our profession. Our last award winner is at McGill in Materials/Metallurgy after taking a gap year at KPM. She will add a lot to the talent pool upon graduation. If anyone has a "one at a time" way of recruiting top talent, we'd love to spread the word.

Pink shirt day and the Boys & Girls Club At KPM, we’re all about spreading kindness and supporting great causes. Our #Pinkshirt sponsorship went directly to the local Boys & Girls Club (BGC), helping support anti-bullying efforts in schools and benefiting kids in Kingston and the surrounding area. KPM is doing its small part to help encourage the youth to believe in themselves. We do this by getting to individuals, be it talking to high school classes, sponsoring science fair prizes (more on this later), or helping to convert wayward Chemical Engineering grads into Metallurgical stars. Teams across KPM locations (pilots, labs, and beyond) proudly rocked their pink shirts to show solidarity and take a stand against bullying and now we'll be seeing pink all year round. It’s all about creating a safe, inclusive space for everyone, and we’re proud to be part of that effort!

We are thrilled to see the Reaction (RXN) HUB come to life! It has been many years of slow and steady progress. Without the amazing support of Modern Niagara and the City of Kingston, as well as the dedication of Sebastian Alamillo-Falkenberg, Morgan Lehtinen, PhD, Karleigh Y., and the rest of the team, it would never have happened. Organic growth takes time, but when the ground is rich through decades of preparation, the results are tremendous. Now companies have the facilities and deep technical support to pilot chemtech and other hard tech processes in a facilitated environment. Thanks to all those who made this possible and see a vision to a globally recognized eco-system.

Mini-electric arc furnace in operation KPM has designed, built, and commissioned a mini EAF with a 40L reactor volume and power up to 190 kW. The unit was built to help clients who have limited feed or do not require large volumes for downstream processing, but who need reliable deportment tests. With a swappable shell, the furnace can easily switch from one metal to another. The front metal and slag tapping ports also allow for continuous smelting in a relatively small volume. Thanks to the team at KPM, led by Denzel Guye, for its hard work, Tim Johnson for his expert guidance, and especially to Canada Nickel Company for its support in bringing this unit to completion. We even built a "baby" one of 4-5 kg to be able to do rapid deportment work. These are in our new building, just a few minutes north of our main campus in Kingston. Please contact Denzel (denzel.guye@kpm.ca) if you have any interest/questions.

KPM Field Trip Towards the end of the winter, we had another KPM road trip with half younger KPM employees and half student interns to show them some production facilities in our field. Thanks to three great companies that opened the door to us: Maritime House Metals Ltd. Cameco Corporation Gerdau North America We saw rhenium recycling, uranium processing, and steel making, all in one day. Each company really rolled out the carpet for us. It is so important to encourage young professionals and students to enter and stay in the metallurgical processing field. These trips, which used to be common for undergrad students but are rare, are important to help get the word out to youth about a dynamic industry that needs good people.

First hike/paddle of the season We had our first paddle and hike of the season last weekend in lovely Frontenac Park. We managed to get some people into canoes for the first time and came out with the same number we came in with - so a great success! More hikes and paddles through the season are coming so that newcomers can experience the natural wonder around Kingston and others can revisit some standout hiking and paddling trails.
