I want to thank the International Journal on Homelessness (IJOH) for the opportunity to add my work to the global conversation at their 2025 conference in Santiago, Chile! This experience reminded me “hope is a violent and hard-won thing" and that “utopia stays an act of fiction until we bring pieces of that vision to life". Hope is becoming harder to come by. But this learning space and community was the unifier, energizer, and hope-igniter I did not know I needed, but am unendingly grateful to have received. Gathering on the other side of the world, with people from all over the world, to discuss our shared efforts and passion was exactly where I needed to be as the United States entered this next chapter. Endless gratitude to the IJOH team for the opportunity to learn, heal, feel, fight, and most importantly - hope. #homelessness #housing #socialwork

I'm deeply grateful for the recent opportunity to present at the International Journal On Homelessness (IJOH) conference in Santiago, Chile alongside my colleague Olawale Olubowale PhD. We shared our research on "Exploring the Experiences of Black Youth Navigating Homelessness in Canada" - a critical study for 360°kids, which examines the intersection of anti-Black racism, structural barriers and youth homelessness. Our presentation highlighted concerning statistics: while approximately 235,000 Canadians experience homelessness annually, there's been a stark gap in research specifically focusing on Black youth experiences. Our work aims to address this knowledge gap and inform the development of culturally relevant support services. What made this conference particularly meaningful was the chance to engage with international researchers and practitioners working to address homelessness through an equity lens. The discussions that followed our presentation reinforced the global importance of understanding how systemic racism and colonialism shape experiences of homelessness. Special thanks to International Journal on Homelessness (IJOH) for providing this platform to share our findings and contribute to the broader dialogue on creating more equitable solutions for youth experiencing homelessness. #HomelessnessResearch #SocialJustice #YouthAdvocacy #GlobalPerspectives #IJOH2024

Yesterday we opened the 2nd International Journal on Homelessness conference in Santiago, Chile. It's a difficult time to have these conversations globally as we see a retraction of human rights in many countries, a rise of right-wing narratives that promote incarceration over care, and an absence of sufficient funding. At the same time, it has been vital to gather to both learn from each other and also recognize we are in the struggle together. I invited our participants to know that we gather not as professionals but as friends. I know many connections on here couldn't join us but you are also our amigos y campaneros in the movement. Speak truth bravely as truth becomes an endangered commodity.
