Saskatchewan mining research highlight: Innovation Saskatchewan investing $166,000 in a Saskatchewan Polytechnic project that supports bioScience and geospatial science applied research. This funding will be split into two projects, one dedicated to geospatial and remote sensing tools for sustainability, led by Dr. Abdul Raouf. This project will support more comprehensive geospatial data for resource industries, including mining, while also supporting Indigenous-partnered research in land use mapping. Our collaborative research with the University of Saskatchewan, Nutrien, and The Mosaic Company, explores advanced techniques for monitoring rock stress changes in potash mines. Using CSIRO HI cells and Vibrating Wire Stressmeters, we tested a new 2-cell convergence method to improve accuracy in tracking rock deformation. This study lays the groundwork for smarter, more reliable monitoring—helping enhance mine safety and efficiency! IDEATE 2025 is coming up on May 13th! We have identified seven topic areas for the 2025 event: advanced chemicals, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), remote sensing, emissions control, heat recovery, mine planning, and novel use for potash tailings. IDEATE brings together IMII's minerals company members, post-secondary institutions, and research organizations to identify industry challenges that are ready for innovative, applied research solutions. IMII Member Workforce Development Initiative: Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT)'s Mining Industry Pre-Employment Program (MIP). The MIP was designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to excel in the mining industry. This program is tailored with the needs of the industry in mind, educating students extensively on: ✔️ The application of safe work practices ✔️ Underground mining ✔️ Mineral processing operations ✔️ Industry certifications The course includes an on-site practicum, allowing them to test their knowledge in a real-life environment. Through this specialized learning experience, students are supported as they gain the crucial skills they'll need to succeed. In addition, the course helps bolster diversity in the minerals industry. That's why we were excited to support Dr. Jocelyn Peltier-Huntley as she completed her study, Transforming Experiences into Solutions: A Multiphase Interdisciplinary Study on Recruitment and Retention of Women in Saskatchewan Engineering and Mining. Dr. Peltier-Huntley is a professional engineer, diversity and inclusion research consultant, facilitator, and speaker. She was interested in how mining companies were going to reach their gender parity goals, which inspired her to go back to school and earn her Master's. IMII Member Workforce Development Initiative: Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Digital Upskilling for the Mining Sector. This program was developed to support and engage with people who are interested in working in mining or already working in the industry, and looking to upskill. It was designed with diversity in mind, prioritizing Indigenous people, women, and newcomers to Canada. The Digital Upskilling program includes 25 hours in the classroom, helping participants upgrade their digital and workplace skills while helping them get connected to the labour market. The minerals industry is ever-evolving due to technological advancements and innovations. Programs like this help students and workers commit to excellence in the face of change.
