“Three months before the start of the 2020 pandemic—and 10 days before Christmas—my husband AJ died by suicide. It was his 35th birthday. Leading up to it, he wouldn’t let me celebrate his birthday. And while he was large in stature—he was my gentle giant. AJ ran marathons and worked out regularly, and he loved spending time with our son Milo, but behind closed doors, he struggled. We referred to his anxiety and depression as his ‘fog’ and when he wasn’t feeling well, he’d say ‘I’m extra foggy today.’ I was lucky enough to develop open lines of communication, as he often couldn’t express how he felt, so we chat through texts using emojis. I tried to show him he was the heart of our home, but his mental illness made him believe he was a burden. After he passed, I was riddled with guilt. But I’ve learned that no one causes someone to die by suicide. When I look back, there are signals. But it wasn’t rational. I am convinced that he couldn’t see all the love and light that surrounded him. I learned that grief is not a linear journey. I joined group therapy, searching for others like me—young widows navigating the unimaginable. Five years later, it’s a journey I’m still on. Milo is now 13. I wake up every day striving to provide him with the love and support that he needs to be a man in this scary world. And I think that, out of tragedy, what emerged is this resilient, emotionally intelligent young man who can articulate his feelings. Milo is becoming an example to other young men on how to have these conversations. He's becoming something much greater. For a year after AJ's passing, I stopped sharing my life on social media. When all felt lost, I joined the Sunrise Challenge in 2021, and my first post was about raising funds in memory of AJ and changing the narrative of men’s mental health and suicide prevention. It helped me rejoin the social world, and I have been rising ever since. Causes like this hold the power of communication. I want to share my feelings for each of those five days, and what it felt like to wake up every morning without my person. The Sunrise Challenge became my platform for healing. And now, I rise to remind everyone—you are worthy.” - Rose Attard Will you rise with us? Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario (YWHO) is addressing the service gaps in the youth mental health and substance use areas in Ontario. These hubs offer services that support individual needs such as counseling, wellness programs, education, employment, housing and peer support, ensuring that youth have access to the care they need when they need it most. The YWHO network is more accessible with expansion to 32 sites across Ontario, creating a supportive space where young people can thrive and heal. It's a positive step forward for mental health care in Ontario, and a hopeful sign for the future of our youth. Learn more about YWHO at https://ow.ly/hqlk50Vtovg #NoOneLeftBehind
