Join BioAlberta at our next Prairie Bioeconomy GUILD event on May 14th, featuring Doug Checknita, Head Brewer and Blender at Blind Enthusiasm Group! The presentation covers an overview of modern Spontaneous Fermentation beer-making techniques and the role different microorganisms and chemistry play in the process and formation of these unique beers. Doug Checknita has been working as a professional brewer for 15 years. He started his brewing career in Calgary and then attended the first class of the Olds College Brewing Program in 2013 where he specialized in brewing microbiology. He went on to work and train at various breweries in Canada and Europe, most notably la Trou Du Diable in Quebec and Brasserie Cantillon in Brussels, Belgium where he learned classic Belgian Lambic brewing techniques. He helped build the breweries and brewing programs at Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company where he works today, specializing in spontaneous and mixed fermentation beer and partnering with labs at the University of Alberta on research projects studying the metagenomics of the brewery’s unique fermentation methods. With a projected need for 18,800 additional workers across Western Canada’s bio-economy by 2029, this resource library, designed for Alberta but beneficial for all of Canada, hosts curated content from leading organizations, and focuses on supporting equity-deserving groups such as Indigenous peoples, women, racialized minorities, LGBTQ2S+ individuals, persons with disabilities, and newcomers.  “Workforce diversity isn’t just a value—it’s a competitive advantage,” said Rob Henderson (he/him), President and CEO of BioTalent Canada. “Employers who embed Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) into their hiring and retention strategies will be better positioned for long-term success.
