It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Mr. Philippe de Gaspé Beaubien II, a true visionary and dedicated philanthropist whose unwavering commitment to water protection was the very genesis of AquaAction. Co-founding the Fondation de Gaspé Beaubien Foundation with his wife Nan-b, Mr. de Gaspé Beaubien planted the seeds of a movement that continues to make a tangible difference in the health of North American waterways and aquatic ecosystems. His vision not only gave rise to our organization but also deeply embodies our mission: to champion and scale innovative solutions for freshwater protection. Mr. de Gaspé Beaubien's legacy will endure through every young innovator we empower and every impactful project AquaAction supports for years to come. Our deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. 🔗 Learn more about the pivotal role of Mr. de Gaspé Beaubien in AquaAction's founding and mission on our blog: https://bit.ly/4iflyE2 More background: https://lnkd.in/eByfqstx https://lnkd.in/eTcjMDP5 #WaterSecurity #Innovation #Philanthropy #Legacy #AquaAction

  • See you there! 👀💧

💧Don’t forget to sign up today!💧 You are invited to a bilingual national webinar with simultaneous translation on April 8 entitled “Ecologically Significant Areas (ESAs): A new freshwater and nearshore conservation tool.” Background: The federal Fisheries Act (Section 34) enables the establishment of Ecologically Significant Areas (ESAs) – a regulatory tool intended to provide long-term protection of fish and fish habitat that is sensitive, highly productive, rare or unique. While ESAs have been in the Fisheries Act since 2012, further details were added in 2019 (Section 35.2) and a framework was developed by Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada in 2023. ESAs have yet to be used but they have the potential to protect critical fish habitat and fill an important gap in protecting aquatic ecosystems. Presenters will include: 🔹Nikki Skuce, Director, Northern Confluence Initiative 🔹Susanna Fuller, Vice-President Conservation & Projects, Oceans North 🔹Joseph Wasylycia-Leis, Senior Freshwater Conservation Campaigner, Oceans North 🔹Scott Beaver, President, St. Mary’s River Association UPDATE: Note that Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is unable to present due to the current federal election. However, DFO staff have kindly addressed some of the pre-webinar questions we received in advance, and their comments will be shared with webinar participants. They also raised policy questions for your review during the breakout sessions and will be able to respond in writing post-election to any questions left unanswered during the webinar. 💧Join us to learn more about this conservation tool and hear about potential opportunities to receive support for protecting a nearshore or freshwater system in your region!💧 ➤➤REGISTER NOW: https://lnkd.in/eHZUBp5R

  • Have you checked the health of your local watershed?     Thanks to the 2025 Watershed Reports, created by Water Rangers and powered by AquaAction, we now have a clearer picture of the health of the Central St. Lawrence Watershed, home to our Montreal office.    Here is what we found:    ⚠️ Water Quality: Rated FAIR, with elevated levels of ammonia, nitrogen, and phosphorus    ❗ Metals Detected: Aluminum, lead, copper, and zinc were present in our watershed.    🦐 Most Common Invertebrate: The freshwater shrimp (Gammaridae)    🌊 Hydrological Flow: Scored VERY GOOD, meaning water trends remain consistent with historical norms    However, there is a major challenge: data deficiency. 76% of all watersheds analyzed lack sufficient data. The more we know, the better we can protect our waters.    👇 Tell us below: What have you discovered about your local watershed?     Discover your watershed today: https://lnkd.in/guHq9Xrq
