On April 30, at the 11th annual Canadian Autism Leadership Summit, we will discuss the fifth priority area of Canada's Autism Strategy: Tools and Resources. The speakers will discuss initiatives and implementation activities that the Federal government could support to ensure autistic individuals and their families have equitable access to tools and resources, as well as what results would show that Canada is improving support for autistic people. It was my honour and privilege to attend the Global Disability Summit in #Berlin earlier this month! The three days were a whirlwind of inspiration and connection. I learned about what's at the forefront of #DisabilityAdvocacy worldwide and explored collaboration opportunities with avid activists. 🤝 Here are some of my #GDS2025 highlights: 1. One of my main goals at the event was to gain knowledge and connections that could inform our work to implement Canada's first Autism Strategy. As a board member of the newly established National Autism Network - which is led by the Autism Alliance of Canada | Alliance canadienne de l'autisme and funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada | Agence de la santé publique du Canada - I connected with #ActuallyAutistic advocates from around the world and learned about relevant policies, perspectives, and partnerships between different stakeholders for autistic rights in their countries. Some include Heta Pukki and Silke from the European Council of Autistic People and Clare Gibellini (who was involved in developing Australia's National Autism Strategy). ♾ 2. Many of my best memories from the Summit were with fellow Canadians, who made me feel like part of a team even though I attended the event alone. 🇨🇦 I was fortunate to meet Chief Accessibility Officer Stephanie Cadieux and delegates from Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada alongside other civil society representatives working towards an #AccessibleCanada. Special shoutouts go to Carly Fox, Alexis Buettgen, Kevin Ng, and Stephanie Evans for the loveliest conversations and for helping me explore the city! 3. I also treasured connecting with young advocates at the Summit. We talked about everything from the role of youths in disability activism to sushi in Berlin. I really hope to keep in touch with the wonderful Abia Akram, Felicity Chapman, Alex Paterson, Pauline M. Hastenteufel, and so many more! ❤️ I am still overwhelmed with gratitude and trying to process the experience. On Tuesday, April 29, we will discuss the third priority area "Data collection, public health surveillance, and research". Speakers will discuss current mechanisms for public health surveillance for autism and the current realities of the Canadian Autism research landscape. Speakers will identify areas where advancements and investments could be made to improve data collection, advance autism research and discuss opportunities for gathering meaningful data that would directly benefit autistic people and their families.
