Today we published an updated edition of Directive 060: Upstream Petroleum Industry Flaring, Incinerating, and Venting. Duplicative and unnecessary requirements were removed by: ◼ Incorporating CSA Standard Z620.3 requirements equivalent to D060 ◼ Merging three sections into one ◼ Reducing five decision trees into one ◼ Shrinking thirteen appendices to four Other updates include clarifying definitions, a new Emissions Research and Innovation section, and necessary references to geothermal operations, brine-hosted minerals, and helium. This initiative aims to reduce regulatory burden and save time, money, and resources, while still protecting the environment, ensuring the safety and health of Albertans, and maintaining fiscal accountability. 🔎 Learn more at the link in the comments.

📝 Reminder! As we enter migratory bird season, it is crucial for licensees to follow bird protection plans and to ensure that all liquid storage areas that could affect migratory bird populations are covered. The timing for migration can change annually depending on the weather, which may require licensees to extend their bird-deterrent programs past the previous or typical dates. 🔎 Follow the link in the comments to read the full bulletin.

Our field offices across Alberta are key points of connection between the AER, industry, and our communities. Recently, we've made a few small but important regional boundary changes to help streamline and improve how we work: 📌 Field Operations East will now oversee select sites from Field Operations Central, expanding their boundary to the northwest to include the Wabasca and Woodenhouse fields. 📌 Field Operations Northeast will now oversee select mature thermal sites from Field Operations East, expanding part of their boundary to the south as far as Township 78. Through this transition, our field staff's expertise remains connected to current operations and emerging activities. For more information on these regional boundary changes, please contact: AER Field Operations Central 📧 FieldOpsCentral@aer.ca 📞 780-642-9310 AER Customer Contact Centre 📧 inquiries@aer.ca 📞 403-297-8311, or toll free: 1-855-297-8311 You can find the link to an updated regional map linked on our Contact Us page. https://lnkd.in/ghPYj4Hw

The 2025/26 orphan fund levy amount is $144.45 million, which represents a 7% increase over 2024/25. The increase provides additional funding to help the Orphan Well Association address the growing number of orphaned oil and gas sites across the province. An operator’s annual levy is based on its share of the industry’s estimated liability. Licensees can view their estimated liability in the OneStop Liability Assessment report, including which licences were included in the calculation. 🔎 See the link in the comments to read the bulletin and learn more about this update.

The AER has issued the industry levy for the 2025/26 fiscal year. The industry levy has increased by about 10% to $250 million. The increase is a result of inflation, changes to salary programs, and funding required for AER enterprise projects. Invoices must be paid by May 1, 2025, to avoid penalty. 🔎 See the link in the comments to learn more about the industry fund levy.
