I make you succeed in innovations with the EPIC Design Framework.

𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 I had an interesting discussion last week with a large organisation about something that keeps coming up: We say we want innovation — but then we let boards, audit committees, and other oversight functions slow it down or block it entirely. Here’s the thing: innovation only happens in uncertainty. That’s the nature of it. It’s not neat. It’s not predictable. And it sure as hell isn’t about ticking boxes. Innovation is about testing, learning, and improving. Over and over again. And if we keep trying to squeeze that into traditional governance frameworks that weren’t built for it, we’ll kill it before it even has a chance. We need oversight, yes. But not the kind that treats uncertainty as a risk to avoid. We need the kind that knows how to work with the messiness — not against it. Innovation doesn’t need permission. It needs support. Let’s stop standing in the way. Most companies are doing this wrong or have done it wrong. Some are doing it right. During the research for my keynote, 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗣𝗜𝗖 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀, I found examples of Google and Microsoft that were doing it wrong but changed course. Essentially, they all create safe spaces that allow people to speak up and articulate ideas without the fear of being judged and give people the mandate to develop these ideas. A company doing this really well is Barco, where they have developed programs to support teams and give guidance up until the moment an idea is validated and funded. Google has a different approach with its 2O% time rule. 20 % of their time, during which people can work on projects they are passionate about. Without governance of boards. It is that approach that gave us Gmail and Google Maps. #innovation #safespaces #mandates I am Jan Van Caneghem, Design researcher at WAAI Design. I help organizations build better innovations by applying the 𝗘𝗣𝗜𝗖 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 and organising a Community of Practice Innovated by Design and a Community of Practice Strategic Innovation. Feel free to schedule a first meeting through my profile page.

I make you succeed in innovations with the EPIC Design Framework.

Last Wednesday, I had the honour to share my ideas on customer-driven innovation and creating an innovative culture in an organisation. Barco invited me to present my new keynote, ‘Becoming The EPIC Designer Of Our Tomorrows’, to over 400 people managers. As I wrote in ‘The Book That Helps You Become The EPIC Designer Of Our Tomorrows’, I am strongly convinced that engaging your customers when creating new services or products is paramount to creating solutions that truly make sense. Inviting customers requires a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset. It requires us to admit that we might be the specialists of possible solutions but that we do not fully understand our beneficiaries' needs, context, and mental model. Clarifying our ideas and assumptions as soon as possible to grow our understanding of needs is very important. We can do this best by using all sorts of prototypes. Prototypes that allow us to explore an abundance of possibilities. We should look more at the world with a LEGO perspective instead of a Playmobil perspective. Instead of a limited set of fixed systems, the world is nothing but a huge collection of building blocks that let us build whatever we can imagine. Thank you for sharing your insights Peru Dharani, Carl Rijsbrack, Peter Kinhan and Erwin Six. And, of course, thank you for inviting me Sigrid Destoop, Eline Uvin and Lien Meuleman.

I make you succeed in innovations with the EPIC Design Framework.

Innovation is often seen as a nice-to-have instead of a must-have. I rarely see a clear, company-wide process for developing innovative ideas and products in all my encounters. And that is a shame. Besides, of course, being the way to renew your portfolio, the innovation process has many advantages. Growing mutual understanding inside your company Involving people from various roles and departments in innovation might make sense. I often see that only dedicated teams can touch those novelties, but that leaves us with a limited perspective on needs and possibilities. Innovation done by multidisciplinary teams involves people from R&D, sales, customer support, marketing, and even finance. They do not necessarily need to have an equal stake or contribution, but at least a wide range of voices need to be heard. This results in a broader perspective on needs and possibilities and a growing mutual understanding among departments and their contribution to solving customers' needs. Engaging employees in the organisation's purpose. When you engage multidisciplinary teams to develop innovations, you also engage every participant to understand the organisation's purpose better and contribute to it, rather than just executing some stand-alone tasks. Being part of the purpose grows your sense of purpose and belonging. Employees who feel a sense of purpose and belonging are more engaged, tend to stay longer in the company and enjoy their work more. Innovation is the soil of your company. Your company started to solve a problem, but then processes and structures entered the company and took the lead. Of course, what used to be a problem might not be anymore or be solvable with newer solutions that better fit the real need. Your customers' contexts and mental models are changing, if not your customers themselves. So, having developed a solution once is certainly not enough. Developing an innovative culture Therefore, developing a creative and innovative culture is paramount. The best idea, and even more so the best execution, results from collaboration. Everyone in an organisation should understand its purpose and develop an eagerness to create its future. Innovation can start from the outside. However, one of the most overlooked opportunities to innovate is the possibility of innovating with customers or suppliers. Engaging customers in innovation is non-negotiable. If you do not engage them, you are missing the essence. However, as we mostly do not operate in a linear supply chain but rather in an eco-system, not tapping into the knowledge of suppliers and mediators is shameless. But you can also innovate outside your company in a new venture. This has a lot of advantages. It is a place to co-create with third parties, and you are not bound by legal, financial, or even marketing and sales rules that can limit you within the company. This approach can offer you more freedom to experiment without risking the company's reputation.
