About us

Lignaverda is an organization focused on sustainable development, with a particular emphasis on climate solutions and reforestation. Its name, derived from “ligna” (wood) and “verda” (green), is also a nod to the Great Green Wall—an initiative of the African Union. This reflects Lignaverda’s mission to create a positive environmental and socio-economic impact through forestry and nature-based solutions. In addition to environmental restoration, Lignaverda collaborates with various partners, such as businesses seeking to offset their CO2 emissions, to create long-term, impactful projects that integrate climate action with social development. The core vision of Lignaverda is not to change the world but to be an example of change. They demonstrate that even in challenging circumstances, positive results are achievable through collaboration and sustainable action.

  • 🌿 Empowering Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Senegal 🇸🇳 At Lignaverda, our work goes far beyond planting trees. We’re committed to empowering local communities with the tools they need to adapt to climate change — starting with smart weather monitoring. Thanks to support from the Flemish Government through the FICAP program (International G-STIC Climate Action Program), we’ve installed smart weather stations in Mbar Toubab, Seno Ndawédiee, Labgar and Loumboul Djibbyin Senegal. These stations provide real-time data on: ☀️ Solar radiation 🌧️ Precipitation 💧 Soil moisture 🌡️ Temperature 💨 Wind speed 💦 Relative humidity This helps farmers make smarter decisions on when to plant, how to irrigate, and how to manage their land — improving resilience, crop yields, and soil health. We’re proud to support climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable land use in partnership with local communities. 👉 Curious about the data? Walk for the Climate: A Remarkable Success! 🌍🚶♂️🌱 What started as an ambitious initiative turned into an unparalleled success! 1,000 enthusiastic young climate champions from @Maris Stella Institute (Malle) took to the streets, walking for a greener future. In recent years, they funded more than 300000eur for reforestation projects in semi-arid regions (Lignaverda projects) in response to climate change. They continued where young climate protesters stopped in Covid times. With every step, they raised funds to support reforestation efforts, proving that small actions can lead to big change. Their commitment and energy inspire us all—because the future of our planet is in the hands of those willing to take action. #WalkForTheClimate #Reforestation #YouthForChange

🌍💚   #Duurzaamheid #Herbebossing #AI #Reforestation #Innovatie #Lignaverda #OndernemersZonderGrenzen #KULeuven Stef Lhermitte Ben Somers Matthew Blaschko Toon Goedemé   ----------- 🌱 🛰️ Deeply honored and truly grateful to announce the Lignaverda Chair. Yesterday, we celebrated its inauguration under the leadership of KU Leuven’s rector, Luc Sels Thanks to the generous support of Steven Buyse, Managing Partner at CVC, KU Leuven will conduct groundbreaking research on “AI-based remote sensing for monitoring reforestation success in semi-arid regions.” This research aims to develop AI-driven models to assess the effectiveness of reforestation in drylands—an essential step in Lignaverda’s mission to combat desertification and create sustainable income opportunities for local communities. This development is essential in compelling marketing-driven companies and organizations to rely on scientific data, preventing misinformation. Genuine initiatives that truly aim to make a difference will have the opportunity to substantiate their impact with reliable and accurate data. --- With many thanks to Steven Buyse for the financial support and to Werner Sels for the active collaboration. The chair focuses on developing advanced techniques that use artificial intelligence and earth observation to monitor the success of reforestation in semi-arid areas together with Lignaverda. Lignaverda is committed to reforestation and sustainable land management practices in these areas by sowing trees in collaboration with local communities. With this chair, we now want to monitor these reforestation initiatives based on earth observation. Using high-resolution images from drones and satellites, combined with machine learning algorithms, this project aims to provide accurate and affordable assessments of tree density, biomass and biodiversity. These techniques will contribute to a better understanding of ecological processes and biodiversity in these areas and support policymakers in promoting sustainable land use strategies. By focusing on accurate monitoring, we can not only better understand the ecological benefits of reforestation, but also contribute to sustainable development and climate mitigation. --- Warm congrats to the research teams of Ben Somers, Matthew Blaschko, Stef Lhermitte and Toon Goedemé. #KULeuven600

🌍 Deforestation & Desertification: A Call to Action! 📢🌳 Deforestation and desertification continue to be urgent global challenges, driving starvation, forced migration, and accelerating climate change. In a world of rapid change and evolving leadership, staying grounded in balance and wisdom is more important than ever. Through thoughtful action and collaboration, we can drive progress and create real impact for both people and the planet. With this in mind, I am proud to step into the role of Italian Ambassador for Lignaverda an international nonprofit organization dedicated to reforesting semi-arid areas at risk of land degradation and desertification. Lignaverda goes beyond simply planting trees; they prioritize the well-being of the communities that inhabit reforested regions. Since its pioneering work in Burkina Faso in 2007, Lignaverda has tackled the unique challenges of semi-arid areas, including in Senegal and Namibia—ecosystems often overlooked by other organizations. Using the Vallerani method, a proven technique that creates half-moon bunds to retain rainfall and enhance seed germination, Lignaverda has effectively restored degraded lands in semi-arid areas over the past 17+ years. And the results are tangible: ✅ 1.5 million tons of CO2 will be sequestered over the project’s lifetime (in progress) ✅ 20,000+ people benefiting from newly established forests Beyond its environmental mission, Lignaverda is advancing toward Gold Standard certification, the most renowned standard for high-quality carbon credits. These credits not only generate real impact but also provide companies with an excellent tool to achieve net-zero goals, aligned with SBTi targets. What sets Lignaverda apart is its nonprofit status, ensuring that its primary focus remains on creating long-term socio-economic benefits for local communities—not financial gain. Transparency and impact are at the heart of its mission. 👉 Leading global organizations such as CVC Bain & Company and SD Worx have already joined Lignaverda’s efforts. Now, I am honored to be part of this journey as well. If you are a business or individual looking to contribute to meaningful environmental and social change, I invite you to explore Lignaverda’s work at www.lignaverda.org and to reach out to me directly. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and build a better future. 🌱💚 Sharath Jeevan OBE Bill George Hubert Joly Steven Buyse Sam Underwood Kris Vermeiren Werner Sels Lignaverda

Lignaverda is proud to be part of the Siya Reforestation Pilot Project, an initiative in Kavango West dedicated to restoring degraded land through large-scale tree planting, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism. 🌱 Why does this matter? Kavango East and West were once dense forests, but deforestation and climate change have taken their toll. Restoring these forests will help combat land degradation, provide food and economic opportunities, and support local communities. 📚 Beyond trees: Education & Economy This site will serve as an educational hub for institutions like NUST and UNAM, while produce from the orchards will be made available to communities at subsidized rates. The project has already created 100 jobs, built essential infrastructure, and laid the groundwork for long-term sustainability. We thank our partners and the local community for their dedication to this shared vision. Together, we are growing a greener, more resilient Namibia! #Lignaverda #Reforestation #Sustainability #Forests #Namibia #GreenFuture https://lnkd.in/e9uswXqk
