Michael Thomadakis, represented GIE as a Board Member at the Budapest LNG Summit, sharing GIE vision for the future of Europe’s gas infrastructure and the role of LNG terminals in securing and decarbonising Europe’s energy system. He outlined how today’s gas infrastructure—and in particular Europe’s 30 operational large-scale LNG terminals—is well-positioned to address both current energy security needs and the challenges of the energy transition. With import capacity reaching 215 bcm/year and plans underway to increase up to 310 bcm/year by 2030 based on current project information, LNG terminals continue to play a critical role in Europe’s strategic autonomy. The speech also highlighted GIE’s long-term vision for 2050: an integrated energy system for molecules and electrons, leveraging terminals to import renewable and low-carbon molecules, enable hybrid infrastructure, and deliver flexibility for future fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia. 💡 𝐆𝐈𝐄 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟓𝟎 – 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: GIE envisions LNG terminals playing a key role in enabling a green transition through gradual emission reductions, tailored to the specific needs of different regions and timeframes. These terminals will support a diverse and parallel ramp-up of renewable energy carriers—such as hydrogen, e-methane, biomethane, ammonia, and carbon—while continuing to ensure security of methane supply. Additionally, they will facilitate both local and regional decarbonisation by offering early access to green molecules, even before dedicated infrastructure is fully in place. 📈 To support this evolution, 𝐆𝐈𝐄’𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬—𝐀𝐆𝐒𝐈 & 𝐀𝐋𝐒𝐈—remain crucial tools for enabling informed, data-driven decisions in a rapidly changing energy landscape. 👉 gie.eu/transparency #BudapestLNGSummit
