April is #CitizenScience month! It's time to celebrate the many research teams working together with citizens to find solutions to the many challenges we face today - from natural disasters and diseases to food safety, skills shortages, social inclusion, disinformation, and beyond. Citizens are on the front lines of these global challenges. They understand the struggles and needs of their communities and offer invaluable insights that can help shape solutions that truly work on the ground. That’s why the European Commission funds initiatives such as cropsCS, ScienceUs and ECSA - European Citizen Science Association. These projects are helping to expand European networks for citizen engagement while fostering citizen science to advance the goals of the five #EUMissions on climate change, water, cancer, smart cities, and healthy soil. 🖐 Want to get involved in #science too? As Maria Skłodowska-Curie once said, "science has great beauty", and it’s crucial for people to recognise and appreciate its profound impact on our lives. From medical breakthroughs to technological innovations, science drives progress and improves our world. A recent Eurobarometer survey revealed that while Europeans have a positive view of science and technology, there is a strong call for research to be more inclusive and accessible. People want science to benefit everyone, with greater transparency and collaboration, ensuring its advancements reach all corners of society. Key findings from the survey include: ■ 83% believe the overall influence of science and technology is positive. ■ 67% agree that science and technology make our lives easier, healthier, and more comfortable. ■ 77% say science and technology should consider the needs of all groups of people when developing new solutions. Moreover, 63% think that “involving non-scientists in research and technological development ensures that science and technology respond to the needs, values and expectations of society”. The Horizon Europe Framework Programme actively support citizen science research and annually honours outstanding projects with the EU Prize for Citizen Science. Additionally, 80% of the Europeans feel that results of publicly funded research should be made available online free of charge. This aligns with the concept of #OpenScience that the EU is championing, pressing for early and open sharing of knowledge and open access to scientific publications and research data. Through #HorizonEU, we are committed to advancing science and improving communication about research to citizens, contributing to a more inclusive, sustainable, and #competitive Europe.
