The European Maritime Pilots' Association (EMPA) had the pleasure to take part in the well-attended 8th Stakeholders’ Conference organised by FEPORT. We took note in particular of the contributions by the European Commission representatives regarding the upcoming European port strategy and industrial maritime strategy.

We wanted to update you on an important development regarding #EMPAsafe, the communication tool we created in collaboration with AMURA to support maritime pilots across Europe. Since its launch, #EMPAsafe has played a vital role in helping pilots share and receive safety information. With the release of #EMPAsafe 1.3 we’ve introduced new features that make it even more efficient and user-friendly. Maritime Pilot safety is paramount, and pilots communicating defects with one another is critical to ensuring our safety. #EMPAsafe 1.3 enhances this with: Smart report filtering – Only displays reports from the last 30 days, ensuring that information is more relevant and easier to navigate. Direct report sharing – Pilots can now easily share alerts via WhatsApp, email, social media or internal channels, streamlining the distribution of critical information. Automatic IMO number validation – Ensures data accuracy by automatically rejecting incorrectly formatted numbers. Improved interface and notifications – The user interface is now more intuitive, providing a better overall user experience. Multiple Homeport Selection - Allows users to select multiple ports from a dropdown menu to view related defects collectively. #EMPAsafe 1.3 remains free for all European Maritime Pilots' Association (EMPA) members and is available on both iOS and Android. To ensure the platform’s security and accuracy, pilots from European Maritime Pilots' Association (EMPA) member states can request access through their respective associations. We’re confident that these updates will continue to help pilots manage safety risks and operational challenges more effectively. If you have any questions or feedback, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We look forward to hearing your thoughts.

🌊With the 59th European Maritime Pilots' Association (EMPA) just around the corner, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude to our Gold Level Sponsor, MedTug SpA. We appreciate your support. Your generosity and willingness to support events like our General Meeting are crucial for promoting maritime safety and best practices. Knowledge sharing, which is essential for improving maritime safety, would be significantly reduced without such support. 🙌 #EMPA #MaritimePilots #MedTug

European Maritime Pilots' Association (EMPA) reposted this
Today we are yet again training the next generation in case all goes wrong! In the morning we train them in the wonderful art of ladder climbing and this afternoon in what happens should they go overboard! Safety is not a cost, it is an investment! I would like to suggest for EVERY pilot association worldwide to do some form of training for new pilots! We have 3 crewmembers on these launches and the video also makes clear why that is necessary. Cutting down on launch crews might seem a quick win in saving money…. until things go wrong.. How can a 1 man crew retrieve someone from the water? Or even a 2 man crew??? more content coming later!! Dr Claire Pekcan’s presentation at our General Meeting in Antwerp last year was fantastic. Fatigue Risk Management is critical for Pilotage authorities to consider in a 24/7 business. Many thanks to our colleagues at the United Kingdom Maritime Pilots Association (UKMPA) for sharing this article and to Dr Claire Pekcan for writing it.
Pilot Fatigue: Issue 337 'The Pilot' An article in our most recent edition of 'The Pilot' magazine by Dr Claire Pekcan highlights one of the biggest safety concerns in pilotage, and something all Pilots have to deal with, fatigue. When asked, “What keeps you awake at night when it comes to pilotage?” Dr. Pekcan’s immediate response was: Pilots working while fatigued. In her presentation at the European Maritime Pilots' Association (EMPA) General Meeting, she outlined how the human body isn’t designed for 24/7 operations. Yet, pilots often work through their circadian low points, which can lead to errors, slowed reaction times, and impaired decision-making. Fatigue Risk Management is essential. It requires both proactive measures (smarter roster design, self-assessment tools) and reactive measures (investigating fatigue’s role in incidents). While hiring more pilots would be ideal, recruitment challenges are an ongoing issue in our industry. A strong fatigue management culture can boost safety, retention, and overall wellbeing. Dr. Peckan recommends: - Employers implement safe work practices, manage shift designs, and foster a fatigue-aware culture. - Pilots take responsibility for their own fatigue, report near misses, and prioritise rest. Fatigue is an industry-wide challenge requiring collective action.
