Sovereign Quantum Computing for European Defence and Security   The European Defence and Security Conference highlighted where European defence is heading. I took part thanks to IQM Quantum Computers to underline the essential role that frontier technologies, such as quantum computing, will play in European defence and security.    A strong consensus emerged: Europe must significantly strengthen its defence capabilities to address evolving security challenges. Achieving this will require a unified approach, with the defence industry playing a key role and overcoming fiscal and political barriers being critical to success   In my contribution, I emphasised the importance of Europe achieving technological sovereignty in key areas like AI, cloud, and especially quantum technologies. Europe has a strong foundation in quantum and is well-positioned to develop very competitive solutions also for the defence market and capture a significant share of the rapidly growing quantum industry. This is not just about competitiveness and economic growth — it's also about security.    Quantum chip fabrication facilities and data centres are on their way to becoming critical infrastructure. Those who control this infrastructure will have the power to shape how these technologies are used. Building strong European capacities in quantum will not only enhance our security but also strengthen collaborations with key allies, especially the U.S. Thank you for exploring the important themes in our panel Benoît Chaucheprat • CnV CONSULTING and Gustaf Winroth! On 16 October, ArianeGroup participated in the 4th European Defence and Security Conference in Brussels. This event brought together key European institutional and industrial stakeholders for in-depth discussions on the strategic, technological and industrial challenges of defence cooperation in Europe. As #Europe faces escalating conflicts on its doorstep, fostering comprehensive understanding and collaboration across Europe’s political and industrial landscape is paramount. Cécilia Matissart, ArianeGroup’s Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer, emphasised the inherent link between defence and space. In terms of both policy and capability, space has to be considered as an essential dimension of defence and security. Our 8,000 #RocketMakers embody this vision of duality to support Europe’s strategic autonomy – from #Ariane6, enabling the launch of European flagship missions, to our leading role in European Defence Fund projects, such as SAURON and EMISSARY for space situational awareness and ODIN’S EYE for missile early warning, which are building up European ambition for space. Jens Schroeter, Head of Public Affairs Germany, also took part in a panel with members of the European Parliament. He underlined the importance of clear policy guidelines and a higher level of ambition for space and defence in the European Union’s next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). These are crucial for maintaining the relevance of the European industrial base in the coming years.
