On day 3 of the📡 Integrated Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Conference #ICNS2025 Andreas Boschen of SESAR Joint Undertaking welcomed the audience and said 💬 "CNS as invisible infrastructure underpins everything we do in #aviation. We need reliable secure, precise, scalable CNS. And as we look to transform European airspace in line with growing traffic demands, environmental imperatives and digital innovation CNS must evolve." ✨ Pascal Luciani from International Civil Aviation Organization addressed in his keynote the prerequisites of harmonised CNS for the future and the new challenges the sector faces with regards to making progress on CNS – in particular the vulnerabilities of CNS such as threats to cyber security or GNSS interferences. In order to make progress Pascal mentioned enhanced civil-military cooperation as part of the evolution of CNS, the retention of sufficient navigation capacities independent of GNSS, the implementation of a trust framework and more. 🛡️ Chaired by Paco Salabert from the European Commission the first panel of the third day addressed cybersecurity and position, navigation and timing (PNT) resilience with Per Andersen from SESAR Deployment Manager, Mathieu HIALE-GUILHAMOU from Airbus, Jorge PEREIRA from EUROCONTROL, Krishna Sampigethaya, Ph.D., FRAeS from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 🎧 Chaired by Luna Babusci from SESAR Deployment Manager the second plenary of day 3 saw Carlos Sequeira from Ryanair, Konstantinos Simaiakis from IFATSEA, Helena Sjöström Falk from IFATCA and Roberta Zimmerman from United Airlines discuss the CNS evolution impact on the human role in air traffic management and the resources, skills, and training needs for future CNS professionals. EUROCONTROL's Head of Standardisation Nikos Fistas guided participants through the programme as Master of Ceremony. 🌟 🏆 Exciting news: two EUROCONTROL teams have been recognised with the prestigious #ICNS2025 Best of Track Paper Awards for their groundbreaking research, respectively in air traffic management & navigation and surveillance! ✈️ Track 1: Air Traffic Management 📝 Paper: Revisiting the Point Merge Sequencing Technique ✒️Authors: Bruno Favennec, aymeric trzmiel, and Karim Zeghal from our EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub This paper revisits Point Merge, a pivotal arrival sequencing technique developed by EUROCONTROL, now operating at over 50 airports globally. The work proposes new perspectives and alternative design options. With no need for new technology, this innovation could pave the way for broader adoption of continuous descent operations under high traffic conditions, driving significant fuel burn and emissions savings. 🌍✈️ ✈️ Track 5: Navigation and Surveillance 📝 Paper: An Algorithm for Identifying Altimeter Setting Errors from ADS-B Data ✒️Authors: Nikos Mourousias, Emilien ROBERT, David De Smedt from EUROCONTROL's CNS Unit This paper introduces a cutting-edge methodology for detecting incorrect Barometric Pressure Settings (BPS) using ADS-B data, a critical step in ensuring smooth transitions from pressure-based to geometrical-based altitude. The algorithm, validated against real-world data and incidents, provides powerful insights into trends and potential errors, marking a major leap forward in navigation safety. 🛫⚙️ These remarkable achievements demonstrate EUROCONTROL's ongoing commitment to innovation, safety and sustainability in aviation. 👏Congratulations to the EUROCONTROL colleagues for their hard work and dedication! 🎉 In the picture on the left Nikos Mourousias receiving the award on behalf of Track 5 Paper team and on the right Aymeric Trzmiel collecting the award on behalf of the Track 1 Paper team. #EUROCONTROL #AviationInnovation #AirTrafficManagement #CNS #ICNS2025 #AviationSafety #Sustainability #ResearchExcellence
