📅 The CCBE held its joint event today on “The importance of the legal profession in maintaining the rule of law”, organised by the Council of Europe, le CCBE, Orde van Vlaamse Balies, AVOCATS.BE, Balie Brussel, and Barreau de Bruxelles: 🔹CCBE Third Vice-President, Imbi Jürgen, moderated the joint event. 🔹CCBE President, Thierry Wickers, introduced the key topics for the discussion: the role of lawyers in maintaining the rule of law and the newly adopted Convention on the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer. 🔹The President of the ECtHR, Marko Bošnjak, highlighted, through the case-law of the ECHR, the vital role played by lawyers in upholding the rule of law, ensuring access to justice, and defending fundamental rights. 🔹Frédéric Krenc, Belgian judge to the ECtHR, built on the President’s remarks by underlining the importance of some key principles pertaining to the legal profession, such as its independence and the importance of the protection of the lawyer-client confidentiality principle. 🔹Andriy Zayats, Head of the Council of Europe Liaison Office to the EU, underscored the significance of the Convention—a milestone for the safeguarding of lawyers’ rights and independence— and that countries could send a strong message by signing it on 13 May. 🔹laurent pettiti, Chair of CCBE’s European Convention Working Group, presented the crucial role played by the CCBE both in initiating and contributing to the work on the Convention. 🔹Peter Callens, President of the Flemish Bar (OVB), concluded the event with some closing remarks underlining the pressures faced by lawyers, especially nowadays, and the crucial importance of their role together with the one of judicial authorities, including the ECtHR for the rule of law. 🤝 Thank you to all the participants and guest speakers for joining and making the event a success! *** 📅 Le CCBE a tenu aujourd'hui son événement conjoint sur « L'importance de la profession d'avocat dans le maintien de l'état de droit », organisé par le Conseil de l’Europe, le CCBE, le Orde van Vlaamse Balies , AVOCATS.BE, Balie Brussel, et Barreau de Bruxelles. 🗓️The CCBE President, Thierry Wickers, the CCBE Second Vice-President, Alex Tallon, and CCBE Legal Advisors participated in the High-Level Forum on #Justice4Growth, organised by the European Commission and the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union.   💡 During this first session of the Forum, EU policymakers and stakeholders explored justice-related topics, such as modernising judicial cooperation in civil and commercial matters, while reflecting on competitiveness and simplification. The CCBE looks forward to contributing to this important Forum. *** 🗓️ Le président du CCBE, Thierry Wickers, le second vice-président du CCBE, Alex Tallon, et des conseillers juridiques du CCBE ont participé au Forum de haut niveau sur la justice pour la croissance, organisé par la Commission européenne et la présidence polonaise du Conseil de l'Union européenne.   💡 Au cours de cette première séance du Forum, les décideurs politiques et les parties prenantes de l'UE ont exploré des sujets liés à la justice, tels que la modernisation de la coopération judiciaire en matière civile et commerciale, tout en réfléchissant à la compétitivité et à la simplification. Le CCBE se réjouit de contribuer à ce forum important.

📢The CCBE joins the Chair of the Committee of Experts on the Protection of Lawyers (CJ-AV), Christoph Henrichs, in calling for stronger protection of lawyers and their professional associations. The finding that 57% of lawyers have faced threats or aggression in the past 2 to 3 years, was reflected in the CCBE’s 2024 report on threatening behaviour and aggression towards lawyers.   💡 Protecting lawyers and their associations is not just a necessity for the legal profession but a cornerstone of the rule of law, human rights, and access to justice. Safeguarding these fundamental principles strengthens legal certainty, which is essential for thriving societies and economies. Ensuring that lawyers can work safely and independently is integral to upholding these values.   The Council of Europe’s new Convention on the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer is a vital step in this direction. Le constat selon lequel 57 % des avocats ont été confrontés à des menaces ou à des agressions au cours des 2-3 dernières années, a été repris dans le rapport 2024 du CCBE sur les comportements menaçants et les agressions envers les avocats. 💡 La protection des avocats et leurs associations n'est pas seulement une nécessité pour la profession, mais également une pierre angulaire de l'état de droit, des droits humains & de l'accès à la justice. La sauvegarde de ces principes fondamentaux renforce la sécurité juridique, essentielle à la prospérité des sociétés et des économies. Veiller à ce que les avocats puissent travailler en toute sécurité et indépendance fait partie intégrante de la défense de ces valeurs. La nouvelle Convention du Conseil de l'Europe sur la protection de la profession d'avocat est un pas essentiel dans cette direction. 📅 🗣️ The CCBE Second Vice-President, Alex Tallon, participated in the conference “Legal & Tax Futures 2025-2035” organised by Larcier-Intersentia (Lefebvre Sarrut) in Brussels, aiming to engage in a long-term review of the key challenges that will shape the future of the legal and tax professions. Alex Tallon intervened as a speaker at the panel discussion on “Future of Europe: What if we raise a fair and sovereign AI for Europe?”. 💡 He took the opportunity to raise questions about the reliance on non-EU technology in key sectors such as justice and law enforcement, highlighting the risks to transparency, accountability and judicial independence, particularly given the dominance of foreign technology companies with links to surveillance programmes. For further reflexion, he also highlighted the implications of the increasing reliance on data and its use in public policy, raising questions about privacy, regulatory oversight and the protection of fundamental rights.     *** 📅 🗣️Le second vice-président du CCBE, Alex Tallon, a participé à la conférence « Legal & Tax Futures 2025-2035 » organisée par Larcier-Intersentia (Groupe Lefebvre) à Bruxelles, visant à s'engager dans un examen à long terme des principaux défis qui façonneront l'avenir des professions d'avocat et de fiscaliste.   Alex Tallon est intervenu lors de la table ronde « Future of Europe: What if we raise a fair and sovereign AI for Europe? ».   💡 Il a profité de l'occasion pour soulever des questions sur le recours à des technologies hors UE dans des secteurs clés tels que la justice et les services répressifs, en soulignant les risques pour la transparence, la responsabilité et l'indépendance judiciaire, en particulier compte tenu de la prédominance des sociétés technologiques étrangères en lien avec les programmes de surveillance.   Pour une réflexion plus approfondie, il a également souligné les implications de la dépendance croissante aux données et de leur utilisation dans les politiques publiques, soulevant des questions sur la vie privée, la supervision réglementaire et la protection des droits fondamentaux.

Today, the Chair of CCBE Human Rights Committee, Barbara Porta, is representing the CCBE as an observer in the hearing concerning the public prosecutor’s request to terminate the mandate of the President of the Istanbul Bar Association, Ibrahim Kaboglu, and the members of its Council. On this occasion, the Chair met with the President of the Istanbul Bar Association.
