Jan-Willem Rombouts built and sold his first energy tech company after helping regulators shape entirely new markets for virtual power plants. Then he did something counterintuitive for his second venture: he deliberately avoided markets that required regulatory change. Beebop.ai has raised $5.5M to build middleware for power grid orchestration – essentially making renewable energy more reliable and affordable by shifting when customers use electricity. Jan Willem's first company Restore (acquired by Centrica) taught him painful lessons about working with two incompatible velocities: "You have an investor landscape, VCs that invest to get certain returns and then you have the reality of an energy market where regulators, policymakers are just not in a hurry." For Beebop, he engineered a fundamentally different approach: Instead of trying to shape regulations, they built technology that works within existing market structures across regions. Instead of pursuing every virtual power plant opportunity, they focused only on day-ahead and intraday markets that function similarly worldwide. Beebop's go-to-market strategy unlocked major advantages: They created a utility-to-OEM flywheel where each new energy company they sign helps bring device manufacturers onto their platform, who then introduce more utilities. They broke through notoriously long utility sales cycles with a land-and-expand approach – starting with low-cost, high-value insights that prove the business case before full implementation. Within just six months of launching the platform, Beebop signed half a dozen of Europe's largest utilities and partnerships with leading device manufacturers. Jan Willem's vision is to become the essential middleware layer for the future power grid, similar to how companies like Cloudflare became billion-dollar businesses by optimizing the internet. "If we can integrate the consumers' devices into the power system, that is going to accelerate the energy transition in a way that truly excites me."
