🌍 Global Experts Unite in Newcastle to Decarbonise Steelmaking 🌍   The steel industry accounts for about 7% of global CO2 emissions, making the decarbonisation of steelmaking a critical, if complex challenge.   To address this, leading researchers and industry experts from around the world have united in Newcastle for the 2025 International Conference on Sustainable Cokemaking and Ironmaking. We are proud to see Laureate Professor Behdad Moghtaderi's Hydro Harvester technology featured by StudyAustralia as a home-grown University innovation that is driving sustainable development. The Hydro Harvester is capable of generating up to 1,000 litres of drinkable water per day – from air. It has enormous potential as an alternative water source in drought, disaster relief and energy applications. 🌍 Sustainable Solutions on show 🌱 This week University of Newcastle and NIER were honoured to welcome the The Hon. Matt Kean, Chair of the Climate Change Authority (CCA), to explore next-generation research partnerships and technologies. Mr. Kean, who leads the CCA in advising on emissions reduction targets to inform the Annual Climate Change Statement to Parliament, visited the University to understand success factors in industry engaged partnerships and climate initiatives of the region. During his visit, Mr. Kean explored some of NIER's research solutions, including the globally recognised printed solar technology (partnered with Kardinia Energy), and other innovative technologies like the Hydro Harvester, ammonia cracking tech, and PFAS harvesting equipment helping to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges.
