New Zealand has one of the lowest numbers of ophthalmologists per capita in the OECD, and almost 1/3 of NZ trained fellows end up working overseas. It was a pleasure to meet with our Health Minister Hon. Simeon Brown along with #RANZCO CEO Mark Carmichael and Dr Sonya Bennett from #ONZ for a Friday afternoon discussion tackling issues such as workforce retention and training.

What stood out for me at APAO 2025 was the time spent with professionals who aren’t just building systems, but navigating complex realities with Experience and vision. Chimgee Chuluunkhuu spoke about the logistical and human challenges of delivering eye care across Mongolia’s vast, sparsely populated regions. Her work bringing telehealth, rural training, and pediatric eye care to hard-to-reach communities reminds us of what’s possible when local leadership leads the way. It was also a pleasure connecting with Dr. Jason Cheng and Gerhard Schlenther, thoughtful voices whose clarity and curiosity made every conversation feel meaningful. Joining me were my son, Samit Sakib Gore, and Tan Ting Fang, this year’s International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) Young Systems Leader Awardees. Their presence brought a fresh layer to these dialogues, grounded, forward-looking, and deeply engaged in shaping what comes next for eye health. #iapb #insightlive2030 #apao2025 #visionfriendsakibgore #vcuseries #yourspecsyourstory

Congratulations to RANZCO ophthalmology trainee Dr Hannah Wood on being awarded The Australian National University’s “2025 Alumni Volunteer of the Year” for her extensive commitment to community service and contributions to Indigenous ophthalmology. Well done, Hannah! Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association NACCHO Australia First Nations Eye Health Alliance Leaders in Indigenous Medical Education (LIME) Network
A Torres Strait Island woman on track to become the first female Indigenous ophthalmologist has been named The Australian National University’s (ANU) 2025 Alumni Volunteer of the Year for her commitment to community service and contributions to Indigenous ophthalmology. In an ANU press release, Dr Hannah Wood said she felt “very privileged to have been nominated for this award, let alone receive it. I am so excited for the future of ophthalmology in this country”. ANU said that after studying politics at the university and working as a parliamentary researcher, Dr Wood returned to the university to study medicine. This switch was motivated by her experience on a parliamentary project to improve school outcomes for children in the Northern Territory.
