❓ What’s one of the biggest factors in growing the quantum ecosystem ❓ People. Australia’s quantum industry is growing rapidly, supported by a strong national quantum strategy and key initiatives. As Dr. Cathy Foley highlighted at the Quantum Australia conference, Australia is home to 38+ quantum businesses and has attracted over $2 billion in investment. Ranked 4th in the world for quantum research, and with the 5th largest quantum workforce, the industry is projected to generate $4 billion in revenue and create 16,000 jobs by 2040. Discussions at the Quantum Australia conference, Investment NSW’s Quantum Connect Industry Showcase, and QuEra Computing Inc. and Quantum Brilliance Quantum Industry Day all reinforced one message: People are the key to driving growth in the quantum ecosystem. At the Investment NSW event, a panel featuring experts Maja Cassidy, David Reilly, Gavin Brennen, and Irina Kabakova moderated by Peter Turner, discussed Australia's R&D opportunities and the need to nurture the talent pipeline. They also shared why they chose Sydney as the base for their work, underscoring the city’s growing role as a hub for innovation in quantum technology. Professor Hugh Durrant Whyte from the Office of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer, highlighted how Sydney Quantum Academy has played a pivotal role in strengthening the talent pipeline across NSW. At today’s Quantum Industry Day, Gavin Brennen, Jessica Richman, Peter Turner, and Celia Merzbacher discussed funding opportunities, government initiatives, and policy frameworks shaping quantum adoption, with Biliana R. moderating the insightful session. Key takeaways included the need to invest in individuals and help them become entrepreneurs and how end users also have a role to play- they can hire an intern, connect with startups, and engage with universities. And we must not forget that trainers and educators are crucial to developing the next generation of quantum talent – so hire and support them. Sydney Quantum Academy is proud to be part of this growing ecosystem, helping to make Australia quantum ready. We’re pleased to offer the opportunity to be part of this cutting-edge research and innovation – our quantum PhD Scholarships open tomorrow and offers students funding to work with leaders in quantum science and technology across Sydney's top universities and gain industry-ready skills. ⚛️ https://lnkd.in/eFMinHhA #quantum #quantumtech #technology #stem #talent #innovation #phd #scholarship #workforce #quantumcomputing #industry

This image is 100% AI-generated. With all the talk of GPT-4o's new photorealism we thought we would try it out. This is what ChatGPT thinks a dilution refrigerator looks like... clearly, it’s got it wrong—though, perhaps our prompt wasn’t specific enough! 😅 Anyway, this is really just a reminder: if you’re interested in working on cutting-edge quantum research at Sydney's top universities with some of the best quantum experts in the world, our PhD scholarship round opens Tuesday, 1st April. And no, this is not an April Fools' joke! Petra Andrén, inaugural CEO of Quantum Australia, opened the event by emphasising the collaborative effort needed to advance quantum in Australia, stating: “We cannot do this alone… the future of quantum is in our (collective) hands.” 💠 Highlights from Quantum Australia Day 1 with a focus on education and workforce: 💠 Examining the Skills Required for a Quantum Education – Moderated by SQA CEO Peter Turner, this panel explored traditional and non-traditional pathways into the quantum field, the skills in demand at startups, and ways to attract more young people into the industry. Panellists included @Andre Luiten, @Sam Pallister, Muria R., Jacqui Romero, and Amyra Roberts-Prayoga. Discussions highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary work, the need to demystify quantum, and opportunities for career transitions and micro-credentials. Panellists also offered advice to high school students in the audience: stay curious, explore different opportunities, build diverse skills, and connect with quantum experts. Chris Ferrie’s session, "Quantum Without the Physics: How to Do Quantum Literacy at Scale," emphasised the need for a paradigm shift in quantum education—moving away from its reputation as complex and inaccessible and instead focusing on practical skills and problem-solving through hands-on, age-appropriate activities. The session also included a live interactive demo. demonstrating that you can send quantum programs to a quantum emulator or quantum computer from anywhere. Beyond the Lab: Unconventional Quantum Careers panel, moderated by Allison Kealy and featuring SQA COO Rebecca Halligan, Tommaso Macrì, and Jonathan Lacey, focused on emerging opportunities in quantum computing, the skills needed to succeed, and the role of industry in shaping the future workforce. Panellists highlighted the importance of communication and collaboration for researchers looking to translate their work into real-world applications. Jonathan Lacey shared that failure and risk-taking can be valuable learning experiences in unconventional career paths—when approached with the right mindset. Looking forward to day 2. #quantum #quantumcomputing #qac25 #conference #technology #education #careers

Congratulations Felix Thomsen It’s great to see our PhD scholars making an impact in the quantum space. We're proud to have played a part in your journey. #quantum #startup #phdscholar
Excited to finally share this publicly! Larry Cohen, Samuel Smith, and I founded Iceberg Quantum last year based on the conviction that LDPC-based architectures will be the key to practical, fault-tolerant quantum computing—unlocking useful applications much sooner and with much less hardware overhead than otherwise possible. We came to this conclusion based on pioneering research by Larry during his PhD, and we're thrilled to have our PhD advisor Stephen Bartlett on this journey with us. We've raised a $2M pre-seed round led by Blackbird, joined by LocalGlobe, to turn this idea into reality. We’re incredibly grateful for their support and have begun building an amazing team of quantum architects. We're also thrilled to publicly announce our first partnership with PsiQuantum today. Over the past few months, we've worked closely with their architecture team, applying the LDPC-based approach to their photonic platform. We're excited to continue this collaboration to advance the next generation of their architecture, including for their Brisbane facility here in Australia. Huge thanks to my co-founders Larry and Sam, and to everyone who's supported us along the way! Links to coverage and launch blogpost in comments.
