About us
The Northern Rivers Community Foundation (NRCF) connects people and communities to tackle challenging social and environmental problems in the Northern Rivers, NSW. NRCF is building a sustainable legacy for the future. We are a community-based independent foundation where donations are pooled and invested in ethical impact funds. Income from these funds supports our grant programs. This means we can provide a permanent source of funds to the community year after year. As our supporters continue to donate, our investment fund grows, and so does the grant funding. Since 2005, NRCF and our community of donors have granted over $1.9 million to over 300 organisations and projects that support families, young people, children, people with disability, indigenous, homeless and many more, who through no fault of their own are suffering disadvantage. We also recently embarked on funds and projects that support and strengthen our natural environment. In 2020, with the launch of the Resilience and Regeneration Fund, the NRCF is focused on bringing all our community resources together to fund solution-based responses to current challenges faced, as well as helping to build a community that is resilient to disasters and crises. Our mission: To connect people who care, with local causes that matter, to enhance community wellbeing.

As part of our outreach to grassroots groups post-Cyclone Alfred, we're hearing that many local groups need help replenishing supplies quickly. NRCF's Rapid Relief Fund does just that by providing fast, flexible funding so these groups can continue their vital work on the ground. Every dollar goes directly to local community-led recovery efforts. Amanda Gorvin, GM at Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary told us emergency response equipment had been damaged and made unusable by Cyclone Alfred. “This rapid grant from NRCF is going to get our team quickly re-kitted and able to get on with the job of repairing enclosures, cleaning debris, and making sure the Sanctuary remains safe for all wildlife and animals,” Amanda said. We've been reaching out to organisations across the Northern Rivers and while we may have “dodged a bullet” in terms of widespread damage, many local charities are telling us that they have depleted their reserves. Smaller, under-resourced groups urgently need support to replenish essential supplies like: ✅ Emergency food bank stocks ✅ Personal protective gear ✅ Community defibrillator pads ✅ Other critical disaster-response resources That’s why we’re launching The Rapid Relief Fund—a targeted, streamlined initiative to get funds into the hands of trusted local groups quickly. Unlike larger national appeals, this fund directly supports grassroots organisations. DONATE here: https://lnkd.in/g55kyvSa Your donation today will immediately support community-led groups providing relief where it’s needed most. The funding will help them continue and focus on their vital work.

Yesterday our CEO Sam Henderson was part of a regional discussion about the impacts of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred with PM Anthony Albanese hosted by member for Lismore Janelle Saffin. While all our Northern Rivers communities are mopping up, and in some places still waiting for floodwaters to recede, the preparedness and connectedness of our region was highlighted by the PM. This is due in no small part to the hard work of dozens of community-led groups that have worked hand-in-hand with our communities, particularly over the last three years since the 2022 floods. It's also a testament to the spirit of the Northern Rivers and why this always has been such a special part of the country.

Our Northern Rivers communities are in for another rough time thanks to Cyclone Alfred. We’ve all lived through a lot these last few years. From Tweed to Grafton, Kyogle to Byron, we know that the power of community has been the thing that makes an enormous difference, especially during disaster, and it will be the same this time, whatever is ahead of us. Please keep an eye out for each other and stay safe by keeping up to date with the local warnings in your part of the region with SES notices, your local government emergency dashboard and the Hazards Near Me app. NRCF has been in talks with a number of agencies and organisations these last few days and we’re ready to step up and do what’s needed as soon as it’s needed. Stay safe friends!
