CCS is a game changer in cleaner energy production according to Steve Ovenden, INPEX Vice President Commercial and Energy Transition, in discussion yesterday at the Energy Club WA industry dinner. “There is no net zero without large-scale deployment of CCS globally, especially in countries like Japan and Australia where gas is an essential part of the energy mix and will be for decades to come,” said Steve. Addressing Australia’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, Steve discussed the critical role it plays in global decarbonisation and the journey to net zero, not just for INPEX, but for Japan, the Indo-Pacific region and indeed the world. He shared Australia’s natural advantages for CCS, and the need for industry-government collaboration to enable large-scale projects. Steve also highlighted INPEX’s Vision 2035 to realise a responsible energy transition through integrating CCS into natural gas/LNG projects, including the Bonaparte CCS project in northern Australia which has recently completed a very successful appraisal program. With safety number one at INPEX, championing this technology is a testament to its proven performance in the safe and permanent storage of carbon dioxide.

Check out this video from last week's installation of the Ichthys LNG booster compression module (BCM). From McDermott International, Ltd’s fabrication yard in Batam, Indonesia, through sail away, transportation, and lifting with Heerema Marine Contractors Sleipnir vessel, to the safe installation on the Ichthys LNG Explorer central processing facility (CPF) – a few minutes of footage to capture an achievement we are all very proud of. Fun fact: the 4,800-tonne BCM lift onto the CPF represented the heaviest single-crane lift onto a floating structure at sea! The BCM will allow us to lower the Ichthys Field reservoir pressure, increase recovery and maintain plateau.
-
The BCM has landed! Today, the Ichthys LNG booster compressor module (BCM) reached its final destination as it was safely lifted and installed onto the Ichthys Explorer central processing facility. The single crane lift was performed with remarkable precision. The BCM installation is one of INPEX Australia’s most significant offshore milestone events since the Ichthys LNG facilities arrived in field in 2017. Over two years in the making, this event is testament to the expertise and dedication of all involved. Now, the BCM enters hook up and commissioning works for the rest of 2025, as we continue safe and reliable production. Once operational, the BCM will provide the extra pressure boost needed to extend the production life of the Ichthys Field – contributing to the energy security of the Indo-Pacific region.
