📉 Room for improvement: New report assesses commitment of top Australian companies to respect #humanrights Macquarie University’s Business & Human Rights Access to Justice Lab has released a report assessing the commitment of 25 top #ASX companies to respect human rights in line with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (#UNGPs).  The report applies the World Benchmarking Alliance’s Corporate Human Rights Benchmark (CHRB) Core UNGP Indicators methodology to make the assessment. Key findings include:  ❌ Notwithstanding the UNGPs expecting all companies to conduct human rights #duediligence on an ongoing basis, disclosure of human rights due diligence processes by Australian companies is severely lacking. ❌ None of the companies assessed are fully embedding their responsibility to respect rights under the UNGPs.  ❌ Assessed companies are not describing how they engage with affected stakeholders throughout the due diligence process. The report cautions companies not to equate #modernslavery with human rights, noting that modern slavery is a much narrower category. 📍 Changes to Government's Indigenous Procurement Policy Last week, the Australian Government released its #ClosingtheGap Annual Report 2024 and 2025 Implementation Plan highlighting its plans to extend and strengthen the Government’s #IndigenousProcurementPolicy and to implement reforms. Reforms will include requiring businesses which register as #FirstNations businesses for Commonwealth procurement to be 51% #Indigenousowned and controlled (the current eligibility requirement is at least 50% Indigenous-owned).
