Online Media
Independent, not for profit public interest journalism organisation, focused on health equity & health in all policies
About us
Croakey.org is an independent, not-for-profit, social journalism initiative focussing on health and encompassing issues that are poorly served by the mainstream media, such as the social determinants of health, health inequalities, the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, climate change and health, rural and remote health, and health policy more broadly. One of our journalistic roles is to publish articles, op-eds and series examining current health concerns and providing evidence-informed contributions to public debates and policy development. A rotating group of editors publishes regular articles at the website - www.croakey.org. Our revenue is sourced via a number of options including services such as: Croakey Conference News Service: comprehensive, independent journalistic reporting from health and medical events and conferences of public interest merit. #CroakeyGO: an innovation in journalism that provides a media platform for communities who share a common goal, concern, or geographic region, to walk and talk with senior journalists and content experts and broadcast and publish interviews, stories, discussions and multi-media content that are focused on solutions. We also provide Professional Services including * Social Media Training Workshops * Sponsored Editorial And we are grateful for the number of organisations who support us either as a key sponsor or part of our funding consortium.

I am also delighted to be joining the board of the alliance. Thanks for the opportunity Public Health Association of Australia and CAHA Board.
🌿 We’re incredibly excited to welcome Professor Paul Kelly to the CAHA Board! Professor Kelly, who recently retired from his role as Australia’s Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health and Aged Care, brings decades of public health leadership to our organisation. He joins the CAHA Board as an organisational director, representing our member organisation, the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA). Paul says, “I am absolutely delighted to have joined the Board of CAHA. We are at a key point in the history of our planet in relation to climate change and it is so important that civil society organisations like CAHA remain strong in their resolve to influence governments, communities and industry to take action to both mitigate and adapt to this issue. Our survival depends on this and I am so glad to be able to play my part in supporting CAHA’s mission to achieve great things in the coming years.” Professor Kelly’s deep expertise in health policy and his commitment to climate and health make him a powerful addition to our leadership. 🌏💚 Photo: We were thrilled to have Professor Paul Kelly, President Lin Oke, and A/Professor Magdalena Simonis AM join us for our team planning day at the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation. With recent team changes and the addition of five new staff members, it was a great opportunity to meet in person and shape CAHA's direction for 2025.

Public health is largely absent from the election commitments made by the two major political parties. We published our Election Scorecard today, rating the commitments made by the Australian Labor Party, Liberal National Party Coalition, and the Greens against seven priorities put forward by public health experts. Adjunct Professor Terry Slevin, CEO, Public Health Association of Australia says that while both major political parties have made significant health promises, the election campaign is missing the mark when it comes to Australians’ health. “Our Election Scorecard shows that there is one clear difference between the two parties when it comes to their position on plans for Australia’s Centre for Disease Control. “But what neither party seems to be talking about is how we are going to reduce the pressure on the health system and keep more Australians out of our already strained hospitals and doctors’ waiting rooms. “National expenditure on health is growing rapidly and now sits at around $250 billion a year – but alarmingly, only around three percent of that spending goes to initiatives that are going to stop Australians from getting sick in the first place." We are urging Federal Election candidates to commit to initiatives that will keep Australians well. Read the scorecard analysis: https://lnkd.in/gsh_KwcK Media release: https://lnkd.in/gzFA-xw4

Our Executive Director, Dr Kate Wylie, and Chair of NSW DEA, Dr Shaun Watson, reflect on our recent climate and health community forums in this latest article for Croakey Health Media. “Even those who were well conversant with the dire state of our climate and environment expressed that they had very little prior awareness of the physical and mental health consequences" We’re looking forward to continuing this important conversation at the #CroakeyLIVE webinar tomorrow- see you there? 📖 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/gFPe9c8V 💻 Register for the webinar: https://lnkd.in/gmkB4HPz

Join a #CroakeyLIVE webinar discussion with medical leaders from the Doctors for the Environment Australia on Tuesday, 15 April, from 7-8pm AEST, about how the next Federal Government can address the climate health crisis. Dr Kate Wylie, a GP in Adelaide, Dr George Crisp, a GP in Perth, and Professor Anthony Harris, a public sector psychiatrist in western Sydney, will share reflections from a series of climate health forums run by Doctors for the Environment Australia in recent months. We will also hear about what motivates them as busy doctors – who have many other demands upon them – to put so much time and effort into campaigning for climate action. The discussion will be moderated by Croakey Health Media Co-Chair James Blackwell, with an article to be published at Croakey afterwards. Croakey acknowledges and thanks the Local and Independent News Association (LINA) for a grant supporting this journalism. Register here to join the discussion https://lnkd.in/gmkB4HPz
